I have a friend owns a Soveral 36 sloop, w/center board, been on the hard about 10 years, had 4 coats good bottom paint 3 years ago waiting for final coat just before going in the water. He will sell to me very, very cheap. I have been on board when the mast was up, its a long way up there, roomy inside, I fell in love with this boat. I have limited income for maintenance and dockage and would entertain having a cost sharing partner, male or female, I am a senior widower in good health. More info to any interested .
I have yet to learn how to get my email available in the forum so we can communicate, without spilling it out to the whole world, somebody please tell me how to do this.

Thank you, David S

What do you consider cheap and how much work is involved in getting her back into the water? I run across 'deals' all the time down here in Florida.. for example, there is a 1984 33' Endeavour being sold locally here for $3500.. and even comes with the semi-trailer that it's sitting on (trailer is probably worth $3500 alone!). Needs an engine and interior work but is otherwise in good condition, just needing some TLC, and I bet you the owner would take a lower offer. Owner moved to California so just needs it gone.

I've seen other really fantastic deals on boats sitting over in the St. Johns river.. 36+ footers going for $2500-$5000 where the owner has either moved, died or just gave up on their 'projects' and willing to take a loss. Some just need interior work, some need engines or masts, some need very little more than good cleanings and lots of TLC from years of neglect.

Heck, there is a 1957 Mooremann (built in Holland) 37 foot all steel sailboat sitting over near Tampa right now and the owner is asking $5000 OBO. Has good running 4-cyl diesel, auto-pilot, GPS, weather station, marine radio, and is set up for one-man operation. Lots of interior teak and stained glass (was a charter boat in the Carribbean most of its life). Owner claims it is just really dirty, needs good cleaning/painting/TLC and calls it a 'diamond in the ruff' (and says he will accept 'any reasonable offer').

Timing isn't right for me at the moment (two kids in grad school sucking me dry!), but if I had the time and money, I would have jumped on several of these 'diamond in the ruff' listings I've run across. Of course, it would help if I had a house on the water with a nice big deep water dock out back as well.. slip fees down here are astronomical. But maybe after the kids get out of school, that could become a reality.

I would suggest that you first find out what the boat needs, a good estimate of costs to get her ship shape (including a good survey) and then find out about how much recurring costs will be (slip fee, insurance, maintenance, etc..). Then you will be in a better position to seek partners and find funds necessary. Good luck!

Cheers,
Brad

Where is the boat and where do you plan on keeping her? Are you planning on keeping her on a lake or on the coast?

David Love it or not, Please get it surveyed! I found this information site, click on this --> http://www.soverel33.com/SoverelDesigns.html

You may be surprised to know it's apparently a rare boat.

"It is believed that there were only 14 of the Mark Soverel 36's made: this figure does not include the earlier Bill Soverel 36' boats which included a Yawl model. Hull numbers 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7 and 8 are Shoal Draft / Centerboard Sloops and hulls 1, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13 and 14 are Fixed Keel, Deep Draft Racing Sloops. "

Old neglected sailboats sitting around for so many years can and do have lots of issues. On limited funds it may be difficult to get her sea worthy.

Thank you guys and girlie,
Lots of good advice here, the Soverel33 site is very good, thanks Denise. The chart " Soverel Designs-Notes ", got my attention when I saw the 37 has a 9.33 beam which the owner had particularly brought my attention too, and the 36.58 LOA, the 3.5 draft, Plus the 25 hp engine, all seem to I.D. this boat as the 37'. And also the hull numbering system, I'll have to get my friend to send me the HIN #. Denice, would hull #s 2-8 mentioned for the 36's apply to the 37? This boat may be more rare than we thought.
Thanks Joe, I am always amazed at the many ways computers and internet works.

Thanks again, David S

Thanks for the correct spelling of sover'e' l. I am not clear on the I and ISP dimensions. Is that measuring up the forestay or up the mast ? Seems there ought to be a number for the main sail leech, the hypotenuse, of the triangle accept if it is a right 90* triangle the length is a given. What would be the distance from the water line to the top of the mast?
Unless I am missing it, the sail area is not given in the chart. I'll be asking the owner for more info and searching the internet. The reverse transom looks like it would be good for a platform for scuba diving and a permanent ladder.
I hope that oil spill will soon be stopped, I fear for the Fla southwest coast, a great sailing area. I my have to consider Atlantic coast Charleston area for future sailing.
Denise, be carefull of dumb crews, OK !

A good sail to all, David S
