I had luck here before, finding a marina for this same friend in Puget Sound (thanks Phil Herring). Tired of the cold, she is now looking for a warmer place to live. If anyone can help out, this is what she asks-

I am tired of being cold. I can live anywhere I want. Southern California is on my "radar".

Warm, sunny weather as consistently as possible is the goal. I like my marinas, safe, clean, quiet, friendly and located near useful things like grocery and hardware stores. I am not interested in marinas that have a lot of derelict boats or any boat houses (fire hazards - no thank you). I want to be close to someplace very cosmopolitan (but not insanely crowded) with as little crime and grime in my face as possible.

My budget is $800/month for a 42' slip, including all the tack on fees and taxes - but less is much better.

I have heard Napa Valley has a nice marina and that Kona Kai might be a good place in San Diego. Also heard Berkeley has an inexpensive marina.

Am very interested in hearing what others have to say about living aboard in California, where it is warm.

Any suggestions and comments would be appreciated.

Thanks!

Well if you are considering No. California, I don't think that Napa is the place for a sailboat. You may want to consider Benicia (not too hot, not too cold). Berkley is not bad but they don't call it Bezerkly for nothing.

I don't know about live aboards in So. Cal. but Santa Barbara/Ventura may not be a bad place to look.

I suggest that you get in a car and make the trip around the SF Bay - So. Cal area and check them out.

kona kai is one of the highest priced marinas this side of dubai. the last i heard was 2000 dollars for a liveaboard 50 ft.
goood luck. might wanna find a mooring in sd--those arent as much. south bay is also cheaper.

Sorry, a mooring doesn't work in this case. Glad I'm in Texas, rather than Cali.

if you are planning to live aboard--mebbe ensenada.....no wait list. slightly less pricey and same if not better options for shopping and such. if you plan on working for a while--- good luck. i just left san diego--only south bay marinas were without looong wait lists.
north bay of sd has wait lists as long as 10 yrs--others 4 yrs. moorings, for permanent one, 4 yrs... goood luck--you will have an easier time trying to find an island packet, new for under 40k usd.

Ventura, Oxnard, anywhere near the Channel Islands is very nice. you will have many places to see and do. I would also consider this the fringes or the top of Southern CA other then Santa Barbara which are way high and have very long waiting list.

Marinas will tend to be more expensive and have longer waiting lists as you move south depending on the their amenities. Most marinas have size restrictions and I recall 36' is near the smallest allowed. You shouldn't have problem finding a live-aboard slip there for that h36 and for less then that $700 limit.

We know of nothing in that price range for slip rental much less liveaboard and like Zee, we came from San Diego and all of the actual "southern California " locations are much closer to double your desired price than anywhere near it. We pay over $500 for merely a 30 ft slip in Dana pt. and was the same in SD. There are moorings I'm SD but again listen to Zee on that as she has personal experience. Agree with another post that a road trip is in order to get desires more aligned with reality both price and community options. Good luck and enjoy a great road trip!

i had 2 boats on moorings as there was a 4-10 yr wait for any slip in sd appropriate or my ericson. then when i found one, that fee would have taken my entire income check every month. the minimum fees for a 35 ft boat were, 2 yrs ago, 800 dollars plus liveaboard fees. the prices were from 18 dollars per foot to 16 dollars per foot. 300 for liveaboard and do not forget electricity. ouch. there are 440 moorings in sd. there are a couple of new marinas --already filled. wait lists 2 yrs ago were 4-10 yrs , still, and rent for a 50 ft slip in kona kai was 2000 with live aboard fees, not including electricity. their smallest slip is 35 ft, last i was advised by a resident(with a lot of money in a 50 ft slip)
chula vista has 2 marinas and there is one in national city---takes a long time to get to ocean, and there are some neighbor issues.......and i believe the rent is only 16 dollars per foot...plus live aboard plus electricity.....

Thanks for the replies. Looks like southern California is a tough one, and hard on the bank account.

I do see a fair number of marinas in the Ventura/Oxnard area. So, these might fit the budget then? Anyone have specifics on any particular marina in this area?

Thanks again,
Ralph

Please do not forget the personal property tax on the boat and sometimes on the water/ground under the boat.

I'm a fan of Almar Marinas and they have ALWAYS done right by me. The link almar.com will take you to their site where they list fee's for their slips. They have a fantastic recepicle policy which allowed me to keep my boat in San Diego for over 60days until I could bring it north. My stay in SD (Cabrillo Isle)was at the lower slip price that I pay at my home marina in Ventura. Almar was them all up and down the coast including Hawaii. Almar was several in the Oxnard/Ventura areas. Mine is Ventura Isle in Ventura.

san diego county does property tax on the block of concrete under boat and on mud beneath when in a slip(unsecured property tax)--so does ventura county.....

in ensenada cruise port marina i believe is 600 usdollars for a 46 ft boat plus live aboard. dont know marina coral. baja naval is about the same as cruiseport. (i had a friend in cruiseport--but i havent researched the place since april, 2011. add electricity to that.

Thanks for your info RGDavis. Unfortunately, the Almar Marinas will price out over $1,000.00/mo. with liveaboard charges for a 45'slip. Her boat is 42' as I have mentioned. No pets either, and she just got a kitty...maybe she could send kitty to visit Zee.

I was thinking it was for your h36 which would be in the $725 range for live-aboard.
