small noreaster

F rom the reports it looks like a typical east coast noreaster minus the burn flood warning . Good point be alert and safe ,can't see any sailing in that stuff. Last spring we had 3 days 40+ with gusts to 60+ heavy rain flooding and massive coastal errosion . Set back sailing by weeks .

It's colder than a witch's tit down here.

When the wind blows from the north it tends to empty the bay. Our low tide on Thursday turned our basin into a landlocked pool and left many a boat with exposed bottoms, as someone described it.

so far, not so bad up here

The worst I've seen on the masthead anemometer so far this morning is 55 knots. We'll see some flooding out of this system, though. Lots of wet.

I think the news tends to sensationalize the weather

out here. They typically announce 60 mph winds, but those are in canyons and passes. Much of that energy is dissipated when it hits the ocean. I always look at the weather then check out the actual conditions. Even when the lights are flashing and the warning flags are up it can frequently be a perfect sailing day. This weekend we may get hit with some light rain just enough to make it miserable. The swells may kick up from the mid and northern activity also adding to the misery. Looks like a good weekend to get some of the honey do's out of the way. As you can see weather buoy doesn't seem too alarmed. However off Santa Barbara things seem to be picking up. I suspect it would not detour Charleycobra. http://www.wunderground.com/MAR/buoy/46054.html

Yep...

Had the prelude on Tuesday (1/1) with very noisy masts and very heavy winds. I knew about this storm last week when I looked at the charts. I commented to a friend at the marina it would be a great day to sail north. Gonna stay home this weekend. And to think, I just washed the boat. :D

Northern California, too

We're right in the middle of the second of three storms. Check this out: http://sfports.wr.usgs.gov/cgi-bin/wind/windbin.cgi No sailing for a long time. The seas outside the Gate are 27 to 30 feet at 13 seconds. YIKES!

Stu, That would not qualify as fun

in my book. That would be more like just trying to stay alive.

I'm with Caguy

I'm in the news biz, and he's right that it's sensationalized. Especially on the Weather Channel, which would have you think that every day is Armageddon. The one exception was Katrina, of course, which turned out disastrous as billed.
