Hi All, I wanted to tow my 20' Eagle to Lake Erie this comming Labor Day and wondered if anyone would recomend the best state park around Port Clinton area to camp and sail the Islands. I am looking at East Harbor State Park. First time on Lake Erie, is 20ft. sailboat ok for sailing close to the Islands? Mark

Watch the weather

Mark I sail a c-22 on Henderson Bay in lake Ontario. You have to have an eye on the weather ane wind. I am not sure how your boat compares to a c-22, but you will want to be in more sheltered areas, rather than in the open waters. Waves are of major concern as well. Use some common sence and you will be fine. Have fun Dale

safety Eq.

Wow I didn't even think of the safety eq. Where can I find a list for Lake Erie sailing. I have VHF handheld, vests, lights, Handheld beam light, GPS, Horn is the only thing I dont have. I have sailed alot on small lakes but never Erie. I would be staying close to the shore line and just go between the Bass & Kelly Islands. My sailboat is a tri-haul and very stable. Like a Corsair f24 but smaller.

south marblehead

There is a launch ramp on South of Marblehead, at Bay Point. It leads to Sandusky bay, which is 5' or so in depth, then to Lake Erie, pst the marblehead lighthouse. Saturday looks like the best day to do anything, barring Erensto the Cane. If the weather takes a dump, and you are near any port, go for it. That means if you ar enear PIB, or Kelleys Is., pull in there and take a ferry back. Trust me on this. Have fun, be safe. Don't forget the air show in Cleveland. If you come up there, put in at the ramps at Edgewater Stater Park. Stay inside the harbor if the weather is bad, and you should see the show quite nicely. I will be there on Saturday, and Sunday and Monday.

thanks

Hey thanks, I would love to go to the air show being a pilot but I just have the weekend and to sail to Cleveland would take a while at 6-8knots. Towing there would also be a pain.. So I will stick to the Islands this time and watch the weather close. "lifes not for sissy's"

I did the Sandusky/Pelee/ PIB

AND BACK TO to Sandusky over a 3 day weekend in the late '60s with my Dad (I was about 16 at the time) in our wooden 19ft. open Lightning. Day 1 we sailed from Sandusky Sailing Club to Pelee, then turned and sailed down to Put-in-Bay. Really nice sail, beautiful conditions & sailing all day. Stayed in PIB for 2 nights over the weekend. (Have you ever slept in the forepeak of a 19 ft. day sailor, with those damn wooden ribs jabbing you all night long?) Left in early AM to return to SSC. On the way back, it was cold & wet, double reefed main, hard on the wind, with the steep Erie chop (on a 19 ft open lightning!). We ducked in behind Marblehead for some cover at about lunchtime (wind from the south), and after ripping the jib to ribbons, slowly beat back into Sandusky Bay. It was probably blowing 25-30 all day. We got back into SSC at the end of the day, cold wet and tired, but what a memorable trip! Wouldn't have missed it! It's been nigh on 40 years since that trip-its been 35 years since I left Ohio-and I still remember it as my first real sailing adventure.

I Just Checked The Marine Forecast

Lake Erie for this Labor Day weekend is going to be rough. If you are determined to go sailing, one choice would be to stay inside Sandusky Bay. This is the website that gives the NOAA forecasts but also some real time data. http://www.sailflow.com/ The other bad news is that Put-In-Bay is not well protected from winds out of the north-east and that is what is predicted. All that said we will probably take off on Sunday morning and go somewhere. The difference is that we are aboard a 42 foot, 25,000 pound sail boat.
