We are thinking of a 1 week sail charter in South Florida around the beginning of March. Is it realistic to think about the Bahamas for a 1 week charter? What is the crossing like time, gulf stream etc. Would it be more realistic to try Key West? Any insight appreciated, Thanks Don

If you only have a week head for the Keys.
I mean you can plan a trip to the Bahamas with a backup plan to the Keys depending on the weather but even if the weather is fine for departure you have no guarantees you may be able to sail back through the Gulfstream on schedule. March is a weather transition month; you may still get cold fronts bringing northerly winds which are not conducive to a crossing. We will usually cross the Gulfstream in a 24 to 36 hour window but we have not set time to get the boat back; we usually leave it at a marina for 2-6 weeks and fly back and forth. Every time we plan a trip we also do a back up plan in more than once that backup plan saved a vacation. I enjoy leaving a boat at a distant anchorage as it changes the perspective and logistics of sailing. We have friends in the Abacos and in Fajardo, PR that take care of our boats so we feel comfortable in leaving them.

why not just fly into marsh harbor and pick up your charter there. forget about the crossing... or stick to the keys/west coast...
