Hello, Elizabeth: Savannah itself is actually not well equipped to handle recreational boaters nor are there places to go on that commercial river. Therefore, folks end up outside town on some stretch of the ICW, which limits the # of places you can explore in your boat and which typically means the marinas are a bit remote. As Bill mentioned, HHI is quite a special place. Look closely at the cost of living vs. your circumstances; things seemed pricey last time we were there (Spring of 2000) and non-seasonal employment may be an issue, if that's one of your needs. There are many places to dock or moor, many more to explore with lots of anchoring out options (No-See'um screens are super important in that country!) and one can explore almost all of HHI on the island's separate bike 'freeway' system, which is great. Charleston is another gem provided you are comfortable living in the Deep South, which it is. Every time we visit there, we are even more struck by its rich history, renovation, easy transportation options, numerous museums & great eateries...and I could go on. The city marina has been bumping up its rates steadily (tho' also adding new facilities) so dock rates might generally be elevated now, and dockage is a bit hard to come by according to friends who are based there, so be sure to check those issues out. Good luck; a leisurely car trip thru that section would be a fun way to spend a week while justifying itself as 'research'! <g> Jack
