Does anyone have a source for starter motors for Universal Diesels. My Cat-30 has an 18 hp Universal and I am in need of starter/solenoid. Also, is it normal for the flywheel to be a little rusty? Should the teeth be lubed? Any help is truly appreciated. Please email me at manawaty@aol.com Thanks!

Starter source

I have found over the years that there are local alternater/starter repair/rebuild shops in almost every town. I have found them to be extremely helpful in rebuilding starters with good quality results. Check your local yellow pages. As for the flywheel, I am not familiar specifically with the Universal Diesel, but a little rust on the flywheel would not normally be unusual. If the rust is just light surface rust it should be no problem. If it appears to be eating into the metal I would be concerned. Check to see that there is no source for salt water to be getting on the flywheel from a hose leak, etc. Thanks Jerry Smith Mobile Alabama

New/Cheap

A small local rebuilder I use for my car electrical stuff was able to sell me a brand new original equipment Hitachi starter for my Yanmar 3GM30F for half the price of Yanmar. Take the numbers off the tag or the whole starter.
