My daughter has volunteered to sew new cushion covers for my O'Day 25 this winter and so I want to strike before she has time to reconsider the generous offer. Does anyone know of a good source for marine fabric? I'm not interested in naugahide but would like something that is durable and meant for a marine environment, and of course reasonably priced.

Thanks,

Dave

Well, of course you know about sailrite. For five bucks you can get a whole book of swatches sent, or order individual to see what you like. . There certainly maybe cheaper sources. At least they r American!

"meant for a marine environment, and of course reasonably priced." : that's a contradiction in terms!

I would try an upholstery store too - my wife did ours last year, and they look great- she had to wash the foam in the tub, and it took all winter to dry, but they smell and look good!

- - Somerset,
I was a professional upholsterer for over twenty years. I found that I could often find marine fabrics(Sunbrella) cheaper on Ebay than I could buy wholesale. Make sure you know what you are buying. Sunbrella has many different lines with many different fibers. They make an exterior canvas as well as interior furniture fabric. The best is made of acrylic fibers, but they also make less expensive fabrics with nylon and polyester. Stay away from cotton unless you run a dehumidifier or sail in the desert.
Foam does not like to dry so if you insist on washing it be prepared to wring it out.

My new interior fabric was purchased at Worth Fabrics in Moore Ok. http://worthfabrics.com/

I am using a faux leather called RANGER in the coffe shade as found here: http://worthfabrics.com/item.asp?cID=0&PID=693 There are lots of colors in the Ranger material, so if this interests you, look around. They have several colors I considered prior to choosing the coffee color.

It is a microfiber material that is reminiscent of a bomber jacket or perfectly worn leather sofa. It is not a naugahyde plastic material, but rather a cloth, so it is at least somewhat breathable. The material is 55" wide, with a 85% polyurethane/15% nylon finish. The backer is a woven 65% polyester/35% cotton so it sews like canvas with little of the stretch found with fleece backers. I am using it very successfully with a non-walking-foot machine.

I have used 25 yards of it doing my interior, in case you were curious how mch you might need. You can find pics of my interior over in the Catalina Mid-Size Boats section. You might need less, as I did a bunch of extra non-stock cushions.

I have not looked into UV resistance, but I am not too concerend as they are interior cushions. I was concerned a little about spills stains and water, but so far the basically identical material on my recliner in the house has stood up amazingly well to the ravages of raising an infant to a toddler. It cleans up just as everyone promised microfibre would. I think I have the ideal boat interior fabric.

Hope this helps some!
