Source for freshwater pump Westerbeke 10-2

Went out for a short sail yesterday, expecting winds to be < 10 mph. As we were motoring out the channel to bay, heard a noise from cabin below - thought it was hatchboards sliding into something.

Have had overheating problems which I had corrected (motored out day before Thanksgiving for almost an hour and no overheating), but have checked temp guage consistently since.

Temp started to rise quickly, so shut down and went below to check - found belt off, then tried to reinstall, but found freshwater pulley hanging. Pump shaft had sheared off. Now need new freshwater pump.

Anyone know of alternate source for freshwater pump (pump that circulates Antifreeze) for Westerbeke 10-2? and are they as reliable as 'marinized' parts?

Haven't checked with Charlie yet - thought I'd get an idea of what I was looking at for cost - Bell's usually beats on-line pricing...

Rebuild? How do you do that with a sheared off shaft? The pulley with end of pump/shaft came off completely - sheared at point where it enters body of pump.

I had been seeing a small amount of A/F leaking out of front of pump weep hole, but did not expect shaft to break...

New pump from marinepartssource is almost $600. YIPES!

You might try AER Marine in Seabrook, Tx. Although they are no longer a Westerbeke distributor, they still have many of the parts in stock. I'm still buying the filters, etc. from them and they are giving me
a good deal and excellent service.....I am unsure of the cost of the pump but have heard they are quite expensive..but it could be worth a call to see if they will give you a deal to get rid of their stock. AER
is listed as a dist. in the 272 manual. Good Luck, Pat

find out what else your engine is used on... Tractor, generator, etc. the water pump should be the same and likely a lot cheaper and rebuilds more likely available. Most marine engines are adapted from some other higher volume application.

I can find no info physically on this engine. Wouldn't even know it was Westerbeke other than it LOOKS like Westerbeke 10-2 I see in most diagrams and guy I bought boat from said it was Westerbeke 10-2.

Even had a friend who has a 12-2 come over the other day to help look for anything that would tell me model #. I thought 12-2 might be just bored out 10-2, but he said it was different install in his boat (Compac 25) and filters mounted on engine were in different place. Only thing I see is what appears to be a number cast in the block that I have been told is not the model #. 'Westerbeke' name plate normally attached to starboard side of fresh water reservoir is missing, but holes where it was attached can be seen.

To my knowledge, there is nothing on the engine identifying it's make or model #.

I have asked our marina to order me the replacement fresh water pump based on the Westerbeke part #. It should arrive Fri/Sat, so will advise as to correctness of pump.

It's for sure a Westerbeke 10-2...I have manuals and blow - up, but am not sure they will help you other than perhaps give you a model of the water pump itself...can look that up if you still need help...
mine are exploded views I believe....PC

Water pump is #33197 - I got that from one of the parts manuals. Yesterday saw the cast numbers in block, got all excited, then remembered someone saying that was not the model #. Heat Exchanger was not 100% like parts manual, but was able to get that 'shade tree'd' together to work. Just can't put enclosure back due to hose crimping...

Thanks Pat. See anything in any of your manuals that might give me another place to look for model #?

What are the numbers on the block? They could be the actual manufacturots numbers. I think most 'bekes are Mitsubishi blocks, and Universal (now owned by Westerbeke) are all Kubota. If theres a Mitsu or Kube model number in there, that will lead you to the tractor number you need. That pump should go for about $50 if you can find the tractor one. The only "marine" parts on a marine diesel are the exhaust manifold and raw water pump. Everything else is pure tractor or whatever the base engine was designed for.

All my manuals were taken from Internet, so nothing specific to my particular engine. The guy that I talked to who had the 12-2 - he bought the Compac new in 2001 and the Westerbeke manual indicates published in 1994. But he had a label inside his manual indicating model # and looked like a shipping label... See attached

Finally, checked my documents. This is what I have in front of me...Westerbeke 10 Two Operators Manual. Also I have an 11 x 17 sheet that lists Fast Moving Parts for all Westerbeke engines and their associated parts numbers and pertinent notes. The list of pumps includes fresh water pumps, Sea Water pumps and Fuel Lift pumps...the sea water pump is item no. 32617. Sorry for my delay...under sea water pumps it has no separate listing for the mounting gasket so I assume the gasket is either not needed or comes with the pump. Also of note, the 10 two engine is the only one that uses this pump. The actual owners manual is small but has 35 pages...the manual only
covers the Westerbeke 10 Two and the Westerbeke 3KW Generator. It appears the publishing date is 3-12-84....the manual part number is 32081. Hopefully, some of this is meaningful....any thing I have you are welcome to receive from me. my email address is pcoulter2@cox.net. good luck! bth..the 10 two is the only Westerbeke model that uses
this part number of pump.

Some Parts manual shows the 10-2 Fresh Water pump and the 12-2B as the same pump. The guy who has the 12-2 has the 'C' model...

I'm pretty sure I have the same manual you are looking at. One vendor indicated the 10-2 is model # 3.0 WMD I have seen this model # mentioned in some parts catalogs when I was just searching for 'Westerbeke' on Internet.

Sea Water pump is hung off a bracket, so no gasket required. Do you have a strainer on your sea water system other than the grate over the inlet?

I ordered/received the fresh water pump, but forgot the gasket. Ordered it this morning. This has turned into a 4 week job of finding/installing a new pump!

Thanks for looking.

Thanks MainSail. Any 'dates' through which this applies? My friend with 2001 Compac has a mailing label that indicates his 12-2 'expires in 1988'. He bought Compac new in 2001, so has all original paperwork. Not exactly sure why a 2001 boat has a 'pre 1988' motor. I think he said his manuals were marked as 1994... My 272 O'Day is 1987 vintage, bought from 3rd party, so don't have any first hand knowledge of when/if the engine is original. Not sure if an inboard was an option on 272 (I know 272 LE has that option, or it came standard with LE model). Can't go back on title as the person I bought the boat from had to retitle it in his name due to the way the OP had signed the title. Is there a way to do a title search in FL?
