Last season our sailing flotilla was on a beam...

reach starboard tack cutting across the south end of Queen Charlotte Strait towards our next anchorage. Sunny cool clear blue sky, quiet and serene. Belle-Vie was on autopilot and the solo skipper was fiddling with trim and soaking up the spectacular vistas. Unexpectedly a 50 foot hump back whale came up out of the water to blow and to visit about 15 feet off our starboard beam. Almost had a heart attack! Now that was a sight and sound I'll never forget. Uncle Walter says...

Longtime sailor, and America's most trusted newscaster -- Walter Cronkite once said the two best sounds on a sailboat were the sound of the engine shutting off, so you can enjoy the silence of sailing, and the shutting of the engine starting up when you want it. A wise man, that Uncle Walter. Pete s/v EmmieLou (Oday 322) Little Silver, NJ

cigarette boats and PW's

The earlier idea in this thread of mounting torpedo tubes to deal with personal watercraft is on the right track, but it's much more economical to save the torpedoes for the cigarette boats, and to just use machine guns on the personal watercraft. As for loose halyards, in my marina we lynched such obtuse boat owners on their own spreaders. But then we had to deal with corpse slap, so you can't win.

A busy airport

There is a small municipal airport runway in line with the marina I usually put in at. For the short time until we can get the boat out of the marina there will be a half dozen small planes flying at around 50 ft. Definately detracts from the serenity of sailing.

Years ago we had a Capri 14.2

We just enjoyed the sound of the center board humming as we picked up speed. Always knew when we were going fast. HUMMMMMMMMMMMMM Jim S/V Java

worst sound

the worst sound is a powerboat pulling into the next slip or fishermen standing next to the 25.5,casting lines at 6 am. considering i and one other mac 25 are the only sailboats in this marina, we usually have to shut up and enjoy the quiet on the lake.

Thanks, Rick

Good Idea! Have engineered the bimini straps perhaps, I guess, like a lady adjusts her bra straps thus making the most of things, at least, for the moment, creating a balanced state that looks, works and feels better! I like your spelling of the noise! Perfect. I know, you too, have hear the windsong bimini strap melody.

Sounds

That firm, solid sounding thud as my boat bounces off the dock when I miss the bumper hanging over the edge. - The new and kind of scary squeaking sound my right front wheel of my Ford Ranger makes now that I've been towing my Catalina 22. - The rain pattering on my tarp on the boat in the backyard when it should be on the lake. Arrrghh....the summer never seems to stick this year. Waaa! Tom Renton, WA

A "Retched" Sound

I just got back from my first real trip outside the Golden Gate Bridge. My biggest mistake was eating some fried potato-like things from Mickey D's as we left the marina. The weather was real rough outside the Gate - wind waves probably four feet or so and wind that was reported as gusting up to 38 knots. The boat (Catalina 36) handled everything great, although my stomach did get a little queesy. Then I had to go down below to the head, which has something of an odor. The combination of the odor and my queesey stomach was too much. Luckily, I was able to hold things down until I got back up topside and got tied off, and then came the worst sound of all sailing as I donated my breakfast to the sea -- "oooaaccchh; blleacchhh..." After that, everything else sounded sweet.

Swing Keel Hum

Two boats in my past had swinging keels; a 26' Lugar and a 22' Catalina. Both had a stainless cable attached to the bottom tip and running up through he hull to winches which would allow you to raise and lower them. The most annoying sound , under specific conditions, was a fully transmitted hum as those cables would vibrate while underway.

The mystery hum

Last year we started hearing an odd hum down below. It only showed up at full sail in a stiff breeze. Around the third time out it happened I got aggravated enough to seriously track it down. Tranny in reverse, shrouds quieted; even took a swim under to check for a crab trap line on the keel or rudder - nothing! Back at speed it started again, just a few seconds at a time as usual. When I finally found it I was twice as mad for not looking there in the first place. One of the bilge switches mounted on a bronze plate had rotated 90 degrees and would switch on for a few seconds everytime the boat heeled over good. Should have been an obvious place to look but it just didn't sound like a pump.

Don't have one

I'm so tickled pink when I'm on the boat even the sound of running aground is OK. At least I'm not siting in a meeting listening to some managerial type discussing how we can milk the government out of another month of contract.

The cable hum

I have to agree with the annoying aspect of the cable humming at speed, and am batting around some really stupid ideas to make it less audible... on the other hand, I notice that I can pretty much judge the speed we're making by the pitch and it can be an indicator of how well I'm using the wind and trimming the sails. Come to think of it, sometimes when the wife expresses an opinion on some of my efforts it's kinda like that....annoying buzz but more often than not, practical. :)

the sound of the keel

Our keel sounds like a whale when its humming, and it seems to vary depending on the water. Ie rought or calm. I worried about it but have checked the keel (a la snorkel) and checked the bolts..all seem good, I guess are boat has the spirit of a whale and when its happy it sings. Spoty

The one I hate the most is...

the clicking sound of the main hatch lock as we lock up to head home. And when the Admiral says.."how much longer are we going to be out?"

Worst sound ever

During one of our early moring sails on our Prindle 18' we were catching enough wind to be up on one hull with both of use hiked out when we heard a loud CRAAAAAACK and a TWANG as our mast headed for the surface of the lake with the sails lowereing it like parachutes.
