I have a 78 H 30. It is powered by a yanmar 12 hp. Very loud. I am thinking of trying to insulate the engine compartment and was wondering if others have done that and what kind of material works best for sound insulation. thanks

Engine insulation

I reinsulated the engine compartment on my H31 last spring. I used the insulation material from Boat US. There was also an article in Practical Sailor a few years back, but the material they said is best has to be ordered, and is more expensive. I used the old foil backing as a template for my pieces, which made the job easier. I used the spray glue from Boat US as well. I was very pleased with the outcome.

Soundown material

I insulated my generator compartment with Soundown lead-foam sandwich material with a foil facing. Dramatic reduction in noise. Yes, it is expensive, but the lead layer is supposed to be much better to absorb the diesel lower frequency noise. They have a complete system of fastners for all applications. Check out the link.
