I just purchased a hunter 23, trailer, and 9.9 engine for $300. The bad news is it has sat outside (uncovered) for 9 years. The trailer is sound (a little grease...), the engine needs a water pump ($25), but the boat has been gutted. The mast, rigging, fiberglass look great, but I need everything else but an owner's manual. Interior pictures would be great because I have no idea what it should look like and where to start. The interior is down to the carpet and I thought now would be a good time to re-wire and re-seal. Any and all comments or suggestions would be appreciated. PS- I need a hatch cover, door panels,... so if anyone can give approx. costs too, God bless you!

WOW... really gutted?

You mean there is nothing on the inside of the boat? No berths, seat frames, shelves, etc????? I can send you pictures of my 1988 h23 And I would be glad to take measurements of anything you need. I made new hatch cover and companionway doors. Was pretty standard. This website offers many replacement things for the 23 and of course Hunter Factory can supply or recommend where to get others. I would seriously suggest making a complete list of things needed. Add it all up and then decide what you can afford to do. Teak is expensive as is Plexiglass and SS rigging. If you have to hire everything done you may end up with a very expensive boat. Let me know how I can help Ward

Thanks for your offers! To answer your question Ward, yes, gutted. In the middle of the floor of the boat was a chemical toilet (or it's remains), sails that looked like swiss cheese, a sink, and a stove top. Not a scrap of wood and nothing in the boat but the carpet on the walls. The owner had the tiller handle inside and it is beautiful, there was a main sail cover that looked new, and I found an anchor in the well under the mouse nests. The reason I was asking for help is this is my first sail boat (and a long time dream), and I would rather do things right the first time and not have to do it over again. Thanks again....

Have Photos of 1990 H23

I have the original photos i shot when I was considering my purchase. Looks alot cleaner and empty without all the gear in it. I might even have the doubles somewhere. Send me your snail mail address to: Winter.jay@dep.state.pa.us Sounds like you will be busy this winter.

Back to Original?

Randy, I assume you would like to build it back to "original" condition. I will take some digital photos and some measurements of the layout. This should get you started. I would sure contact Hunter on their 800 #. You might be surprised as they just may be willing to share some of the original design drawings and specs. If they would do that, it would certainly make your task easier. Good Luck Ward

Are you sure you want an original interior?

Just a thought, but there are some areas where the interior of the H23 is weak. Ventilation is poor on the right side of the main cabin, so you might want to think about fitting a modified bulkhead, or at least fit some louvers in the bulkhead so you can get some air on the starboard side. Also, IMHO, I think the original wiring and switch panel leave much to be desired. I've already modified my panel and I'm about to add a new panel so I can manage my electrics better. The wire supplying my masthead light showed signs of overheating, and I would replace it if I could. While your interior is out, take the opportunity to run wiring for all the other goodies that will improve life aboard (depthsounder, knotmeter, stereo, tillerpilot...) even if you don't have them yet. It will be easier to do without all the other stuff in the way. I would suggest running some small-diameter plastic conduit and pulling the wires through them rather than running wire by itself under the carpet. That way you can add more wires later, or easily change any wires that overload and burn. Good luck, and if I can help in any way, just holler. Peter S/V Raven
