I have just purchased a 1983 O'Day 23 that is in "poor" condition but functional per certified marine surveyor. Call me crazy but there is something about this boat. It has a good hull, white 28 foot mast, main, jib, jenny and furling jib and all the hardware, sails included show very little if no ware plus the usual boat stuff. This is my first boat after sailing as a kid (read 4yrs sea scout) and a divorce. So I need any help out there. jdn

Hey John, Sounds like your on the right tack. You probably have a great boat. All it will require is some time and someone to have fun with it. Ask all the questions you like. I have a 23 also but a much older one. Get the boat seaworthy and then use the heck out of it. The more you use her, the more you will learn what you need and want out of the boat. My priorities changed once I got my fully restored boat back into the water. I knew the boat was seaworthy and exceptional in many ways but now I had to make it user friendly with a roller furler and lazy jacks. Lines led aft are my next project along with opening ports. It is all so energizing. Ask away and have fun with it. You found the right place! James

John, I have a 1983 O'Day 23. I have had the boat for 8 years and absolutely love it. I still have the hanked-on jib, but I am asking Santa for a new set of sails, including a furling head sail. I'd be happy to answer any questions for you.The only major expense was I had to replace the outboard. I went from a 7.5 Honda 4-stroke to a 9.9 Johnson 2-stroke. The 7.5 was plenty of power; and if I had to do it again, I would have stayed with the Honda.Have fun,Terry (pampel@gulftel.com)

John,I have a '77 O-23, sail on Lake St. Clair. Have done quite a bit of maintenance (rebed, rewire, etc.) Ask away! BTW - the 23 is a blast to sail. I firmly maintain that it's better than therapy!!

I fully agree with everyone here! Ask away! I have a 1972 O'Day which I'm restoring/refitting. My projects will be done and ready for splashing in spring 2004! The other Oday 23 owners are great people, all the combined wisdom and experience is always helpful. I've been so impressed, I actually put a message board on my Oday 23 sailboat site.
