Greetings, we have recently puchased a Hughes H25 circa 1980. It came with 3 sails; main with one set of reef points, working jib and a 135% genoa. We sail exclusively in the Gulf Islands in British Columbia. There are controls for outhaul, cunningham andleech line (main & genny). The basic sail shape control missing sees to be a boom vang. Wondering what improvements we would see with the addition of a vang? Thanks in advance David Wrate s/v Cindino

Boom Vang

David, The boom vang controls the twist in the leech of the mainsail by restricting the boom's tendency to "lift up" in breeze or puffy conditions. Mostly used for downwind sailing and reaching, you will be able to control how much power is developed by the mainsail. Easing the vang allows the sail to twist and depower while tightening the vang will increase pressure and "power up" the leech. I would highlyrecommend installing a boom vang. It will greatly increase performance. Thanks, Bill Colombo Doyle Sailmakers
