Soot on my Transom

I have been noticing a slight amount of soot about a foot or so on the back of my Hunter 31. I bought it in August and every time I wash it I have to brush it off. I don't seem to be using an access of oil and I don't notice any smoke except at start up. I'm new to owning a diesel and maybe this is a foolish question. The engine is a Yanmar 2GM. I run it at about 2700 to 2800 RPM. My mechanic just changed the oil and it is about a half inch above the second hole on the dip stick. He said it's not a problem... Is it? Thanks in advance for your help and information.

Soot Problem

Maybe you have the throttle opem more than is absolutely necessary to achieve the maximum possible hull speed? If so, you would be burning too much fuel - which might be causing exhaust smoke and soot. Try reducing the revs slightly and watch to see if the hull speed drops. If the speed does not drop, you were trying to push the boat too hard and can aford to back off on the throttle and save fuel and perhaps soot accumulation!

Not to worry...

...Diesels run on the dirty side under a load, drive behind a bus or truck in slow traffic, dark smoke, PU! Same with our boats. The angle of transom on the 31 under power causes an air eddy at the waterline, the exhaust gases circulates there and deposit soot on the transom. So if its not bird crap on the deck, its soot on the back. Its part of owning a boat, wash... wash... wash. At least your still sailing. Hope you faired well from the hurricanes this year. I also have the 2GM and its normal to have a dirty transom. Keep the prop and bottom clean and also check the mixing elbo. Last spring after cleaning out the mixing elbo and a clean prop and bottom , my boat powered up like it never did before it really reached hull speed real fast and was able to floor it without any smoke. As the season past on and everything collected growth it started to leave soot on the trasom again but not really bad like it would other years so check everything and it should be better. nick
