Widgeon project reply

Chris and Sean, There's a fellow in Assonet Ma named Rudy Nickerson who has been having a boat manufacturer in Bristol RI build the O'Day Widgeons for him. Rudy has them brought to his shop where he assembles them. Rudy bought all the O'Day molds and hardware from O'Day when they went out of business. He would be the only guy that I know who could help you with anything that you may need for this boat. I'm giving you his link. Give him a call. Joe

check out 1978 Brochure for colors

Rudy Nickerson at D&R Marine is the ultimate source for parts and advice. However, he doesn't still build the Widgeon, unfortunately he could not make any money on the boats. It just costs too much to build them, a real shame to me as a former Widgeon owner! Anyway, I have posted the Widgeon pages fro mthe 1978 brochure on the boat info section of this website, under Model Info, then click WIDGEON. (link is at top of this page) I'm confused though about what you mean by "wood seat rail"? Did a former owner of your son's boat add some wood trim to the seats? Also, what "rear seat"? The 1978 Widgeon only has seats along the sides of the cockpit, nothing across stern. Rudy should have information on the hatches for the stowage area under the foredeck, those were an option on the 1971-80 WIDGEON. Rudy has sails, but any good sailmaker can make a jib for a Widgeon or you can buy a kit from SailRite Kits. Rudy's price will be lower than most sailmakers, slightly higher than SailRite Kit. Good luck with this Widgeon, they are a GREAT BOAT! Oh, one more thing, if you need an Owners Manual/Rigging guide for the Widgeon, let me know!

Thank You

Thanks for the info. I just ordered a manual for 7.00. The Widgeon I have does'nt have built in side seats, It looks like It had wood seats That went from the rear seat and fit under the front seat where the mast is,There Is a slot under there that looks like it held up the wood seat that ran along side the hull. Thanks again Chris

1970 or older

From your description this Widgeon is not a 1978, but would be a 1970 or older model. If you ordered that manual from D&R it will be more acurate for the 1971-82 models. (I have a copy of that and use the large rigging diagram as part of my manual) If you described the boat to Rudy when you ordered the manual he might send you some of the diagrams that he gave me copies of for my manual. Either way, these were GREAT boats, I owned mine for 8 years and kind of miss her now! I in fact built a covered stowage box into my Widgeon between the forward flotation tank and the mast partner. It did require glassing in a bulkhead for the aft end of the box. The only problem was that I never did get it watertight, so it leaked when it rained. It was interesting to note that that bulkhead did a good job of distributing the compression loads of the shrouds (upward pull of shrouds would actually flex the gunwales in when sailing), originally this was handled by a metal bar glassed into the mast partner, but O'Day used a steel bar and it eventually rusted out. Since it now sounds like your Son's boat was approximately the same vintage as my old boat, feel free to ask me any questions about the boat if needed.

Hi, We are very new to sailing and Oday. Could you tell me what D&R is please? Also we have a 1969 Widgeon (1469) Hull#20969 and need a manual so that we can get the boat read for the season. I am not much of a sailor but my son is and could use some help. Thank you in advance for you assistance. :)

D&R Marine

D&R Marine is locared in Mass. www.drmarine.com The manual is 7.00 and they are all the same. If you go to the photos and look at the brochuers you can figure out what year your Widgeon is. Good luck Chris

D&R Manual newer

John, the manual from D&R will be more applicable to the 1971 and newer Widgeons, it mat still help, and Rudy can probably answer questions from you, but you might be better off with a more complete manual. I use to have a 1969 Widgeon, Class# 1791, Hull# 22698 and created a comprehensive Owners Manual for the Widgeon with some help from Rudy at D&R Marine. (I even was able to give him some info that he didn't have) My manual is a bit more than Rudy's ($10.00 covers printing and postage), but It does cover what D&R's manual doesn't, and also includes scanned copies of some of the old brochures (including 1969).
