So, the wife and I are about to lower the mast to affect repairs (replacement) on the spreader anchors that attach them to the mast... the pin holding the base of the mast in the tabernacle doesn't have any kind of safety pin... coter or otherwise... is this normal? Seems sketchy to me...

I drilled holes in the ends of the bolts and inserted cotter rings. Or you can use nuts with the nylon but they are harder to get on and off.

Does your boat have the aluminum tabernacle, or the newer stainless-steel hinge plate?

If the older-style aluminum tabernacle there should be 2 cotter pins through the pin inside the base of the mast to prevent the pin from coming out of the mast, but there are no cotter pins or safety pins to hold the pin into the tabernacle (not needed and the way the tabernacle is desgned they wouldn't do anything anyway.
