I am going to go over the swing keel whereas I have the boat up on blocks at the present time..

I want to know - is the pivot pin really a nylon pin?
How much does the centerboard weigh and is it all glass or lead encased glass?
The pivot pin - is it above or below the waterline?

My boat came with a mahogony kick-up rudder, but I notice many other owners have a stationary glass rudder.. Whats standard issue for this model year?

Thanks

i have never taken the swing keel out of my 74 oday 20, but from what i understand it is made of fiberglass over a core which is probably foam. i remember reading it weighed 40 lbs someplace. the 400 lb of lead ballist is in the fixed keel area around the keel board trunk. the pivot pin is nylon as far as i know and is located in the trunk area underwater. i can see the area on the forward section of the trunk where the pin is covered with chalk or whatever and then painted on my boat.

my oday which i bought 4 years ago came with a solid fiberglass over foam core rudder. this rudder goes deeper than the keel with the board raised so i have to pull it where i moor due to rocks. i wish i had the kick up rudder.

I have a camp near Lake George in NY that I will drive to sometime this month. If you want to trade your solid core foam for my kick-up rudder let me know.

The fixed foam-core fiberglass rudder was the standard rudder on all model years of the 20, makes no sense to me considering the shoal draft of the keel with the CB raised (it is a centerboard, NOT a swing-keel! a swing-keel would contain most if not all of the boat's ballast and would require a winch to raise/lower. Many swing-keels are made to be locked down while sailing to prevent them from retracting if the boat were to be knocked down).
Getting off my "soapbox" and back to the rudder, O'DAY offered the kick-up rudder (mahogany blade with aluminum cheeks) as an option, my opinion is that the kick-up rudder should have been standard, but surprisingly it wasn't. The later K/CB O'Days (222 and 192 did have a kick-up rudder)
Oh yeh, almost forgot! The CB is fiberglass, semi-hollow (was made in 2 halves, then bonded together with thickened resin) with lead flashing inside to give it just enough weight to lower easily instead of floating. Not sure if there was originally any foam inside....... my DS II CB doesn't have any foam and the broken 23 CB that I saw one time at D&R Marine had no foam, just hollow fiberglass shell.
