Some people are way too trusting... and clueless

So, I was at my marina yesterday doing a little cleaning on my boat.... and a guy on the neigboring dock seems to have gotten a new Tohatsu sailpro, long shaft 6HP O.B. These are very sweet little engines. But... what is wrong with these pictures?

This marina has NO security, is secluded and mostly deserted during the winter months. My guess is that this O.B. will have a new home very soon. Poor guy.

The owner must be very naive. It might be an expensive lesson.
Our club would never allow someone to let any part of their boat to overhang the walkway. The park has come down on us for safety concerns.

The guy probably thinks he's being very clever. 'Look at me, I can get ALL the way back into my slip'!

Its not smart for all the reasons noted. And a theft risk. Someone should tell him to lock it, and deal with his short slip problem in another manner.

So maybe find out who he is and drop him a friendly warning note?
Yep

The guy who owns the marina is very elderly and lives in Florida during the winter months. I don't have a master list and doubt he could give me one. I have a few phone numbers for my slip mates and will send them a text asking if they know who this boat belongs toand if they have contact info.

He deserves to have his engine stolen just for being so inconsiderate as to block about 75% of the walkway. Imagine trying to gat past that while carrying a bunch of gear to your boat.

This particular dock has a lot of "derelict" boats on it and this one is the only one with new dock lines and this brand new O.B. My guess is he just recently purchased the boat and does not know a lot about marina etiquette. Some of the other boats on this dock look like they have not been visited in a long time. My guess is that this marina will be out of business in the next few years. But for now, I have a slip, with water and power, a bath house and an annual slip rent of $1K. So... not complaining.

I like your approach to this and we need a lot more people like you in this world. Are you interested in moving to my marina:biggrin: ? ? ?

Ditto.
We have good people in our club like that. Members always look after everyone's boats. If that were here, someone would have re-tied that boat up a little further out to clear the dock. I give people enough credit for figuring it out when they came back. Our docks are gated but it wouldn't be difficult for someone to motor over to them and steal what they wanted. Locking everything up is still the best plan.

near Granbury Tx? There was a motor just like that, on another forum, listed as stolen there just the other day.

I'm in the market as were . Colonial Beach
Not a good idea for all of the reasons already mentioned.

I am amazed at the things that people will leave unlocked. Why make it easy for a thief?

I think that a courtesy note would go a long way. Maybe even notify the management so that they can get in touch with the guy.

Without disagreeing with anyone, remember that locks keep honest people out. I have a couple tools each on my boat, truck, and home that could make quick work of the little cable locks that I have used on small outboards like that on dinghies or daysailors. Most of them are only 3/16 inch cable. Ask any good bike thief how long it takes!

I'll assume that Markwbird was probably just joking about deserving something stolen, considering that he is such an upstanding member of this community.

"Credit for figuring it out..." There was a nice, newer Precision 18 on our committee boat dock, with the jib half unrolled and flapping. I went on board and re-rolled it, with 2 wraps of the sheets around the furler, and cleated off the sheets and coiled nicely. Cabin was unlocked, so I left a note, "Hope you don't mind, but I fixed this for you..." type of thing. A week or two later, I saw the same boat, put away as before, without extra wraps of the sheets, without being cleated and coiled nicely. Oh, well, if that jib unwraps again during a storm, at least I know it's not my jib...

Only took one little note..."Hi, we wrapped your halyards around your shrouds, wouldn't want them banging the mast and wearing out the lines"...for me to get the point my first year out...

Course, now I use bungees...

Cripes, he even left the kill switch lanyard plugged in ! I'm sure when the boat gets loaded with snow, that outboard will keep the stern above water by resting on the dock :)

New guy or not, common sense would dictate that the said motor was a tripping hazard. At the very least inconsiderate to others. He deserves what will happen. Cant correct stupid. Maybe some hazard tape around the prop??
