Summary....It was blowing stink

It doesn't matter what NOAA said.....The wind was strong enough to blow out a jib. I wouldn't want to have been sailing in those conditions if I could have avoided them. I hate heavy weather sailing.

Well, the Genny WAS tired after all.

The Sunbrella had been damaged in a storm and removed so I knew it was gonna go sooner or later, I was just hoping for a bit later. Once we exited the Strait, it was a great sail. Going to windward, the apparent was an average of 8 knots more than true so it was breezy and wet. Funny thing was, the sail blew out in 20 or so in flat water later, not during the bash. The whole nastiness only lasted about 3 hours, early in the trip. Hell, once in the channel, we were having so much fun making 9+ in flat water I flat missed my turn into Friday Harbor and we ended up halfway up Massacre Bay on Orcas before I realized it. Talk about feeling like a moron...

Fastest and most "memorable" passages

I've made on the ~35 NM DDW slog from Catalina Island (east end) to Dana Point have been accomplished by jumping on the the tail end of fronts passing thru. With waves of over 8-10 feet you can't trust the wheelpilot not to broach at the bottom so it's hard to get more than a quick pee break for long periods. Usually alone cause it's hard to find people that enjoy sailing in weather. Beating into something like that only takes a couple hours before you wonder if you are still having fun. Last time I did a beat like that, had 2 new sailors aboard & after they had each chummed twice I figured it was time to give it up & divert to a closer port downwind.
