Smiley faces

Most folks around here seem to make unrestrained use of smiley faces to indicate tongue-in-cheek comments, for example. Based on the expressions on the faces in your picture, I'd say you need a few winking smileys after the word enjoyed. On the other hand, I suspect I'm not alone in wishing that I were there with you!

Ouch

That is a trip that cost a few thousand....OUCH! I wouldn't want to be out in those conditions. I like keeping my gear and the boat in one piece. I use to love conditions like that in my force 5 or my Sunfish.

Well, we did have three short term cases of Mal de Mar

The kids got sick first, including the little Granddaughter who's not afraid of anything, which led to my daughter feeding the fishes. They all felt better afterwards. I couldn't get pics of the worse stuff, just too wild. Yeah, I knew it was gonna go, just a matter of time.

Conditions like that made me think....

I would really like to have two reef points in my next main. I do have a 110 because my 150 has a nasty shape when I furl it. My Catalina 30 with the tall rig needs a reef and a jib reduction around 15 knots.

I have three reefs in the Main

and one each in the Staysail and Mizzen. I'm gonna have the Genny recut and hanks added so I can try it out as a Mule for the Mizzen.

Three Reefs....

I guess you use the third reef point instead of a storm sail. Pretty good idea. My current boat isn't going to see bluewater so it will only get two reef points. Never sailed a Yawl...I looked at one before I bought my current boat. It was a Pearson 365. I wished that I had looked at that boat a little harder because it would have been a good boat if it was in good shape. At the time I was looking for a coastal cruiser (ended up with a Catalina 30) but if I had been thinking further ahead I would have gotten an older boat that could do some bluewater. Oh well, I still have 16-20 years before I retire so I have time to get another boat down the road for what I want.

I like yawls.

this is the first one I've sailed and it'll point as high as a sloop and higher than many. I also like the versatility of the rig. I looks pretty cool flying five sheets too.

Charlie, I like Yawls too

and I'm kind of sorry that they have fallen into disfavor with designers (they cost more than sloops, are sailed mostly as sloops, but rate terribly under most racing rules). The mizzen was probably useful while tying in your reefs but were you using it when you took the picture? I wouldn't think you needed it. Hi back Fred.

30 Knots?

Not trying to call you out, or doubting you entirely, but with very few white caps I was curious & checked the Saturday 04/05/08 wind speeds at NDBC for buoy 46088, SISW1 & even 46087 and they were a bit off your 30 mark. You sure that was not apparent wind speeds or the Saturday before? Station 46088 located at New Dungeness, WA (Hein Bank) http://www.ndbc.noaa.gov/data/5day2/46088_5day.txt Also Station SISW1 located at Smith Island, WA http://www.ndbc.noaa.gov/data/5day2/SISW1_5day.txt And even Station 46087 located at Neah Bay, WA http://www.ndbc.noaa.gov/data/5day2/46087_5day.txt

I saw 45

I was out Sunday, moving my boat down from Whidbey down to Elliott Bat between 10am and 5pm. I have to admit that I did not even bend on my sails, mostly because once we were underway, I did not want to go forward for that long, plus we had a lot of ground to cover. So we motored the whole way. At the start, we saw 6.5 knots gps over the ground heading north with the wind behind us and then just 4.3-5.2 heading south the rest of the day. The tide was supposed to be with me, so of course just past Edmonds where it speeds up a little the waves got very short and steep, we were down to 3.5 knots as we slammed into some pretty steep rollers. I think my wind indicator reads a bit high, but it was between 35 to 45 all day long, once it touched 50. (Subtract out 5 knots over the ground) So yeah, it was windy. I saw a nice Hans Christian or Lord Nelson off Possession Point under jib alone, and he was almost keeping up with me under power. By the way, it was quite pleasant under the dodger.

I cleaned it up for you..

Wind Speeds in MPH.. 05 Apr 8:00 pm SE 24 Gusting to 29 05 Apr 7:00 pm SE 20 Gusting to 22 05 Apr 6:00 pm SE 23 Gusting to (no data) 05 Apr 5:00 pm SSE 21 Gusting to 23 05 Apr 4:00 pm SSE 22 Gusting to 24 05 Apr 3:00 pm SSE 23 Gusting to (no data) 05 Apr 2:00 pm SSE 24 Gusting to 26 05 Apr 1:00 pm SE 22 Gusting to 28 05 Apr 12:00 pm SSE 23 Gusting to 24 05 Apr 11:00 am SSE 20 Gusting to 21 05 Apr 10:00 am SSE 20 Gusting to 23 05 Apr 9:00 am SSE 14 Gusting to 16 It looks like between 9:00 am and 8:00pm the avg wind speeds were between 20 & 24 with gusts up to 28 or 29. I guess I would have called it as I saw it on my anemometer which if using an apparent wind speed would have been 30+. We sailors do like to push the limits on exaggerating wind speed wind but there is no right way to call it. Some use average speed with a plus as in 24+ knots some use the peak gusts as in 29+ but I feel using a peak gust with a plus denotes 29 was your average then the gusts were higher. Some use Knots when they mean MPH and some use MPH when they mean Knots. Charlie did not say whether it was 30+ knots or 30+ mph but bellow he did say 25 knots so if it was 30+ knots that's really closer to 34.6+ mph. See what I mean confusing and impossible to nail down.....! Bay sailing varies in wind speed and the NOAA buoys are not always reflective of actual wind.

Thanks Maine Sail. Anyway, you can go 5 miles away

up here and see a 20 knot difference. Anacortes was 8 knots for the same period.

Mainesail , It gets better because many stations are

using MPH and kilometers per hour. If we compare knots to kilometers we get a big change in numbers. I think it is suffient to say that I wouldn't have been out in that on purpose. ;D

The wind speed..

Ross, The wind speeds were not bad but I've been through the Strait of Juan de Fuca and it does get short and steep for a while under the right conditions.. We get that up here some times off the Kennebec River, in the right conditions, but it's only a short crossing... Juan De Fuca and 25+ can build some seas but they peter out after a while so it's generally only a short bumpy ride then back to just the 30+..
