Solution for fogging glasses?

The only slightly anxious moment underway on my recent grand tour of the Maine coast

was off the forbidding outer tip of Isle Au Haut among the unmarked ledges in large swell. The kind of fog that is condensing into rain and wind driven mist right at sea level suddenly blew in. Navigation wouldn't have been a problem except that my glasses fogged up so badly that I couldn't read either GPS or the chart. Wiping with a handkerchief just made them worse. Fortunately, I had everything laid out so I could carry on with the compass that I could see and I just make out the boat icon on the pre-entered GPS route. It was frustrating though not being able to double check my position and landmarks.

If anyone knows of a good solution (as in a bottle or spray) to this problem, please let us know. It was colder than the weather most people will cruise in so it may not be a common problem though.

in a bind, spit on them and rub in gently, mixing the condensation in and with a regular kleenex, they may streak just a pinch, but you will be clear. IF they have dried salt water spray, then you need to rinse them in clear water before you attempt to clean or the salt WILL scratch the lenses over time. I keep a squirt bottle of lens cleaner (vodka will work, but is much more expensive, and tempting as well) or fresh water jsut to keep them rinsed and clear.

If time permits, stop by a dive shop and buy tube of mask clear. There are sites on the web that will show you how to make this, but I was hesitant to ruin a perfectly good set of lenses, if the material was not compatible with my lens.

Interesting reply, Roger, since

I was thinking along similar lines, although using a dive mask on top of your glasses, and we have some "Captain Bob's Miracle Mask Cleaner" from a trip to Hawaii many years ago - works just as well as spitting on 'em.

You will never guss their website www.blugoo.com They also have a phone number 801/698-5301. We use it for our glasses and computer screens and the instrument displays. Tell them that I "found it at the boat show". <g>

Rain-X, makers of the chemical windshield wiper, also make a decent anti-fog compound that should work. :) Available at most autoparts stores and big box retailers like wallyworld.

or just put on a inclosed motorcycle helmet :) Never go offshore without it. No matter what the conditions, it will keep your sign clear and your face dry.

A dab of common hand soap rubbed on the lens and polished will keep it clear for a long time.
