Hello,

I sail on Lake Superior and enjoy extending my sailing into late October early November. I have been looking for a used solid fuel heater for my Dufour Arpege'. I have been on boats that have them and the heat is just great...

I know that Dickenson manufactures a good model, but I know there are some different models or companys that make them..

Suggestions? Have one for sale?

Thanks,
Doug

Here in Maine we extended our season to Thanksgiving aboard our Ericson 35 using a Mr Buddy propane heater. We only used it at night in the cabin while we were awake. It was turned off and stored in the cockpit at bedtime and I would wake up early and bring it back in to heat up the cabin for breakfast. We would regularly have 30° nights.

We now use it aboard our Caliber 40lrc to heat the cockpit enclosure in the spring and fall. Our regular heater is a Hurricane H2 hydronic system with 3 zones and a Mermaid reverse cycle heater/AC as a backup.

May not be the best solution but it is cheap and easy.

Thanks for the info.. I used a propane heater in the past but was not happy with the moisture it put in the air.. is the hydronic system the type that uses lake/ocean water for heating and cooling?

No, that is the reverse cycle system that uses raw water.

The hydronic system is very similar to a home forced hot water furnace. It burns diesel in a combustion chamber that heats a coil filled with an AF mixture that is circulated throughout the boat to fans that push air through small radiators.

There's a great article about installing a hydronic system on a boat in the newest issue of Good Old Boat. The magazine is not on the shelf yet but subscribers are now getting them in the mail.
I just got a Mr. Buddy for X-mas to help keep things warm.

Yes, it is the March/April issue. My wife has an article published in this issue so we got an advanced copy. You'll be getting yours soon!

I just looked at the article again and it's a diesel forced air heater. Not sure if that's the same thing as a hydronic system or not.

Cool. Thanks Danny. Hydronic is forced hot water though. What is your wife's article about?

Duh! hydro = water, not air. I should have been able to figure that one out.
My wife's article is called "Sailing with autism" and it's about our family and our son with autism and how we use sailing as therapy and all the trials and tribulations that go with it. Let me know what you think when you get it.

I will Danny. A good friend of mine just bought a Catalina 30 to sail with his family. His son also has autism. I am sure he will be very interested to read you and your wife's insights.

If money were no object, I would be switching my stove over to diesel with a unit from Wallace which will also exhaust the moisture and heat the boat. www.scanmarineusa.com
Since I am not rich, I will be installing a charcoal cabin heater of English origin which was given to me. Pansy, out of Cowes.
There are also on the web several sites with DIY plans for solid fuel heaters.

Made by Pascal Atkey of Cowes, Isle of Wight, UK. The heater is called a Pansy. Not sure why. These heaters have been around since some time in the 1940's and according the website are still being produced. Seem to have pretty good reviews.

Doug,

I have a solid fuel Cole Stove, original to our Ericson Independence. I removed it from the boat as we are re-doing the interior. It has been dissambled cleaned and polished.

We are thinking about going back with a diesel fuel heater in which case I would be willing to part with it if you are interested.

you can email me at Keiffer@Keifferphillips.com

I have been looking for a Cole stove for years. Haven't been made in quite a while. If Du4sair doesn't want it, please let me know.

To the original question about solid fuel, Try www.marinestove.com They have a nice line of wood burning old time stoves. These stoves are soul satisfying as well as functional. Be sure to look at photo page.

Mel22 - thanks for reminding me of this great manufacturer. To heck with the boat! I want one of these for my winter cabin in the woods of northern Ontario!

Keiffer,

I am interested.. can you give me some dimensions of the stove and any parts (pipe, flue, cap) that are included or I may need to locate?
