As was mentioned above the Mac Classics (S and D) sail better than the X or M if you don't want the powerboat type feature. They also have smaller interiors if that is of concern.Looks like I have lost out on the boat we were looking at., So now I have a question, we are now looking at an X. Very clean boat, I can see the differences in the X and M but what about the differences in sailing? The search for a Macgregor has been long! We are ready to be on the water!

....in 10 years, I only hit bottom 1x. (in the 10k backcountry)
\I have looked on Craig's list in every city in florida LOL. I actually remember the add for your boat but you had sold it when I found the add. I am looking at a 1998 26x that is located in St Augustine Fl. The boat looks VERY clean. Unfortunately there is someone ahead of us that may buy it Tuesday. We will see.
However.. the S and D only sail well if they are kept light weight. They are light boats with a smaller sail plan. For example, the Catalina 27 is only a foot longer but has 44% more sail area than a 26S. The Catalina 27 is a much heavier boat.Mac Classics (S and D) sail better than the X or M

I can agree with that and I was talking about the way most people use their boats not how we chose to use ours.However.. the S and D only sail well if they are kept light weight. ....
,As you read through the mods we have made to our Mac please keep the following in mind. First this is our first sail boat and we had never sailed until we bought the Kera-Jane in the spring of 2009. We are moving into our late 60's so we are setting the boat up for easy handling on the water and trailer and also for extended cruises of over a month, sometimes not resupplying on the water for over 3 weeks. We anchor almost every night, so good anchoring equipment and shore lines have become a top priority for us.We are explorers more than sailors. This boat is our Jeep on water combined with the hauling ability and comforts of the Suburban that pulls it down the highway. It is meant to take us about any place on inland and coastal waters in some comfort and hopefully safety. Some of the mods have certainly hurt the sailing performance, but that is OK as we are retired and in no hurry. With that in mind hopefully some of what you find here will help you or someone to some degree with "your goals and wants" in mind,Sumner and Ruth
Looking great Walt!Apparently I had a small binge from the boat diet.. put this ice chest and TV in today just checking the fit. Together they probbaly added 25 ro 30 pounds to the boat. Regarding the camping aspect.. I also like the pop top.. This picture was taken with a go pro camera today - just testing it out.
