I just Sold my Old Boat --- We loved her, she's a 1980 Watkins 27 that I had for 9 years. (I now have a great 1999 Cat 36MKII! ). But I think an idiot bought her (it was done through a broker) and she's (my old boat) real pissed at me (fyi the buyer was more concerned about the TV I had on board than things like the sails and all the great upgrades I had -- he got her for a song) Well last Friday I picked up the Check for the boat and signed her over... Since then I've had one thing after another happen to me....what do you think? 1) 30 minutes after I got the check I got a speeding ticket going to my new boat (ps.I haven't had a ticket in years). 2) Sunday while on the 1st leg of a cruise on my new boat the Transmission completely locked up, miles from my home port. 3) Today/Yesterday I had a new transmission being FedEx'd priority overnight to the mechanic at the port its stuck at and FEDEX LOST THE PACKAGE !!... What's next --- Is it over now ? -- I've heard things come in 3's. Am I safe on the rest of my cruise? ...........ps its 30 hours since the tranny left the shipper and FEDEX still can't locate the box??

Dear worried, I doubt if you are serious or not. If you are though, don't get all superstitious about the selling of your old beloved boat. All boats go the way of the boneyard or to a sailor who lets his or hers teak dry out and crack. Bad times happen to humans as well with improper care. In fact, although hard to do at times, one must always remember that they are only a boat, not human or alive. And I will close with this: Your old girl would never be vindictive to you in any event. My suggestion is to slow down and drive within the speed limit or buy yourself a power boat if you must get there in a hurry! Fairwinds, Art

Art: I am not sure that you are correct. First, the boat is named after my daughter. I am not sure that I would be haunted if I sold her to anyone else. Second, I have the last 15 years of my life in this boat. On the other hand, if I could remove the name on the old one and have her christened with her new name before I sped down the highway to the new one, maybe I'd be okay. Oh, oh, what I'd do for a H'37.5.......... What would I do?

Remember, I just sold my 84 31' and got a 93 37.5. Well, here's MY story ... Moving the boat from NC to Annapolis was a disaster. I got involved in a huge project at work and had to squeeze moving it over two weekends to meet work demands. Plus, on the second leg of the trip, my father and I nearly lost the boat and each other in a storm on the bay. In fact, almost every day out there was spent fighting incredible thunderstorms. Now, in the last month boath the transmission and the refrig have gone bad ($$$$$). And, I find that I really need to replace that #$$# head/holding tank hose that I just replaced on my 31. The only consolation is that it's 100 degrees here and I don't **have** to go sailing (even though I have to keep on making payments.) As for my '31, it was basically paid for and I never really had any trouble with the boat. It was a dream to sail and I'm seriously missing her. Wanna make a deal?

Maybe I'm a lot more happy than I thought! Have you figured out what is wrong with the tranny? The hoses and tank are just some of those things that YOU may or may not anticipate. And the refrigeration is just a bummer. Cannot not even sit aboard in the dock and drown you sorrows in cold beer. Do you know what is wrong with the refrigeration unit yet? Maybe just a charge or a new compressor? Hopefully, you'll get these problems resolved and you can forget about the 31'.

missed my 36 (for a while)
I went from a 36 to the 380. During the learning curve, I doubted my move. I have the in-mast furler and it was a problem at first. I have now gotten use to it and went out on a 36 Catalina with a hoisted sail the other day to help the new owner learn to sail her...Did I ever get a lesson. My days of a hoisted sail are definitely behind me. I have come to love my new boat and no longer doubt my move!!!!
