Hi All Thanks for all the past help. New question. On my "new to me" 1986 34 Hunter, the solar vents don't seem to be working. I've been told they probably need new batteries, Nicad I assume. Before I take them apart, it appears that I have to access the battery by taking the outside off the boat and it appears to be caulked to the deck. Does anyone know what type or size of battery required and the easiest way to replace them? Thanks for your help! George

George, those are owner installed.

You're on your own on that one. Solar powered vents weren't invented yet when your boat was built.

Mine Have a C Cell

I picked a replacement up at Radio Shack. They come in packs of two but only needed one. Before you invest in a battery make sure it is not somthing else wrong. If you put a regular battery on it it should work if not you have differnt problems.

Check without battery

Try it without the battery in bright sunlight, if it doesn't work the unit is defective.

check the brand

If the vent is made by Nicro, determine the size of the vent ( the center hole, 3" or 4"). If it is the small Nicro there is no battery. If it does not work in sunlight it is broken. The larger Nicros have a nicad battery which is recharged by the solar cell. It needs to be in place for the unit to operate. You may find it is simpler to buy a new unit rather than be frustrated by the old which may never work. Good luck.

Steve, an idea.

It should be easy to run a wire from, say the lighting circuit to the vents and run them off of ships power. All you need a resistor to get down to 1.5 volts. Just a thought. Richard; :)

Why would I want that?

Fred: Why would one want to run the vents off of the batteries. They are SOLAR! Many of these vents are installed in opening hatches. That would mean that we now have a wire to run and hide too. I guess I would rather buy a new vent!

they're just standard c size nicads, you can get them at radio shack, costco, or any electronics store for less than you'll pay at WM
