Solar Vent in the Plexi Hatch

I have a 1992 H28. Has anyone installed one of the day/night solar powered vents in the plexigalss of their forward hatch or in the skylight in the center of the cabin? I need to get some air circulation and I think having the vent set to INTAKE and letting the air be pushed OUT of the small head and aft cabin roof hatches would be sufficient. Will the hatch or skylight still be strong enough and do you think the vent head will catch the genoa sheets? Thanks for any feedback.

Forward hatch on mine

Steve - On my 35.5, I have a Nicro solar vent installed centered in the forward hatch. I don't have a problem with it catching jib/genoa sheets, but have been out when it was pretty heavy and took water over the bow. That much water coming from that angle and they aren't watertight, the v-berth got pretty wet. But they do fine in the rain, and there is a cap that you can use to replace the vent if you are anticipating being out when it gets messy. First time, shame on me. Hopefully no second time! T J

Installed one in my H31...

The clearances were tight, but it went in fine. My boat was heaven for mold and mildew until I installed this solar vent in the hatch, a mushroom vent in the head and a SS vent in the companionway. No problems since. Good luck

Ditto for us, we added one in the forward hatch and it really improved ventilation-but you need to put in the plug in a sea!

Fixed "Skylight" in Cabin

What do you think about installing the solar vent in the fixed "skylight" instead of in the forward hatch (see my photo in the original post)? Did you choose the hatch so you got better ventilation through the V-berth, the main cabin and to the back of the boat?

Steve, That was my idea.....

SS passive vents in the pinboards, and a solar vent in the forward hatch. This facilitates air movement throughout the lenght of the boat. My 31 has two cowl vents aft of the mast. Why are you skeptical of installing in the forward hatch? I really think it would be more effective. The other option is to install it in the forward deck, but I chose the hatch, just to avoid cutting a hole in deck, and it seemed less likely to trip/step on.

Plug or Cap?

I just bought a 1992 H30 with vents in the forward hatch and in the hatch over the galley. They each have a plexiglass circle that can be closed over the fan and dogged down, and I think that would pretty much keep water out, but I haven't seen anything that I would call a plug or cap to be used in heavy weather? This is off topic from the original post, but will someone please elaborate on what the plug or cap looks like? Thanks!

Forward Hatch

I placed one in my forward hatch -- mold and mildew has not been a problem or issue since. It's going four years strong at this point. It has not interfered with the rigging at all. A little water leakage every now and then, but the benefits have far outweighed that occasional annoyance. G'luck.

picture of the disks in the solar fan

I placed two solar 3" fans in the hatch's on my 79 Hunter 30. One is set for intake and the other in the vberth for exhaust. Works well except, after 4 years, the rechargeable battery needs to be replaced. They now only run during sunlight. Here is a picture of the fans pulled and the disks in place. This was for the hurricane prep in September 2003 on the East Coast.
