Anyone out there actually install one of these on their boat? What's your opinion of it? Pictures? (I know there are some pictures posted on solarstik.com).

More than you ever wanted to know

Check out this Sailnet forum posting; it starts off as a general Q&A about the effectiveness of solar and wind generators, and quickly (well, relatively quickly) turns into a hyper technical discussion about the Solar Stik and its capabilities. One or two posters seem to have put the Solar Stik through some pretty rigorous testing. IIRC, they said it doesn't generate quite as much energy as advertised, but it comes close. It seems to owe its efficiency not to any breakthrough in technology, but in the fact that it marries all of the latest state of art in one very well built unit. Honestly, I don't think it would have merited so much attention if it weren't for the fact that the owner/designer of the company's wife is one snappy looking dish. Don't believe me? Look in the "Sails Call" forum of this site and the "Boat Babe On Strike" thread.

Slight correction, Mike

I believe Steph (aka Boat Babe) is also co-owner of Solar Stick.
Let's give her the credit she deserves too!

Boat Babe

I think Boat Babe is the one who actually got
the whole thing all the attention.
She is the main brain of advertising the solar stick,
but i think we need to give Brian the credit for making
the solar stick.
Maybe they will jump in and wake up the boat babe forum,
have not seen any new bikini photo's recently.

Here Is Another

lenghy forum on the subject. As mentioned about another, it can get rather technical at times.

A little pricey I think

Yes it pivots, folds and twists, but it is a little pricey for what you get. If money is no object and you've got a ketch rig or limited mounting space it makes sense. We added an arch with integrated stern rails, dingy davits, radar mount, windgen mount, propane tank mounts etc for about $3000. We don't pivot our panels, we are usually off playing most of the day and I've seen people pivot panels and then wind or current changes the orientation and they get nothing. We now run 460 watts on a flat mount above bimini (aluminum angle icon from home depot) and haven't plugged in once in 4.5 years of cruising. We even leave the boat for weeks at a time with the fridge and freezer running without problems.

I also think the rail mounted wings are another option although take a real good look at the potential shading effects. Our bimini blocked them most of the time when we added two more panels to the rail. Plus boarding wave smacks could easily take out the panels if they were not protected.

go to the Stik Site

We've placed links to all the discussions that we could find on the "links" page... There's enough there to kill an evening, or a 12-Pack ;)

As for sales... there are about 60+ marine installations nationwide ranging from Cat-amarans to Cat-rigged sailboats.

Here's the latest one we've received:

I think if you are going to advertise (again)...

This solar stick, at least point to the chandlery, not your personal marketing website.

My 2¢

Brian...

...let's not go there.

If you would look at the first post, you will see that I didn't bring about this conversation. We've all been there and done that. My attempt was to steer the "marketing" (as you see it) conversation to the proper areas for discussion, nothing more.

I've been posting here for many, many years as a cruiser, and NOT as a sly marketing ploy... despite your implication.

And, for the record...

...the prices for the Solar Stik™ advertised here on SBO are the BEST prices anyone will find for the marine systems.

If anyone is shopping, they should buy it here based on price alone!

Don't be a hater.......

Brian D,

Before you get nasty with someone on this site, at least read all the inquiries and posts completely. Brian merely pointed to the website due to the fact that we post ALL discussions we find on the net (good or bad) so they can be easily accessed.

If anything, we have refrained from using our personal postings in any sort of advertising more than any typical business couple would.

Life is too short. You seem like a man who needs to smile more.
