I installed a 10-Watt solar panel on the split backstay of my H23. I ran the wire down one side and intalled a connector through the fiberglass. This was a neat, clean installation. I purchased a DC voltmeter and a toggle switch, which attaches to both batteries. I also installed a separate switch, which controls which battery I am charging. All this is neatly contained in a plastic box. All items were purchased at Radio Shack. At a glance, I can check the voltage of each battery. I charge one battery one week, flip the switch and charge the other battery the following week. I have not had to lug a battery home all summer. I am very happy with this set-up.

Which Lake Monroe are you on?

If you're on Lake Monroe in Florida, I may have seen your boat. I usually keep my H23 in Monroe Harbour Marina. I'd invite you to stop by and say hello except the boat is out of the water at the moment for some work. I'll be back by the end of November. Peter H23 "Raven"

A great set-up

I was going to try and do the same exact thing this winter. Rather than trying to reinvent the wheel, is it possible to get a schematic, picture or description of the parts you used etc . It sounds like a great set-up. thanks in advance chris

some additional info, please

Where did you get the solar cell itself, at Radio Shack? How much did it cost? Do you need a voltage regulator on it or is it small enough of a charge that you don't (I think you might only need one on 15watts or more). What a nice set up. But please let me know where you got the solar cell and how much it was. Thanks, Todd

Me Too

There is an article in the archives re: my setup for installing a panel on the split backstay. I used a 15W also from radio shack online. I suggest you wait till winter to order as mine was on sale in Dec for about $89. The setup is simple and consists of stainless wire similar to the sidestays on my H23 and 4 wire clamps. I used a thru hull connector and it was cake to set up. If anyone wants a few pictures, send me your email address. Gary Bridi
