Solar bursts may threaten GPS

For info, an article today on the CNN web site said "Solar bursts may threaten GPS". According to the article, on December 6th there was a very strong solar flare that caused GPS reception difficulties. During this flare, some GPS receivers had reduced accuracy while others lost their signal completely. Solar activity runs in 11-year cycles and the next peak will be in 2011. So, if "funny things" are happening with your GPS, there is a posibility it just may be something to do with a solar flare. There was an indepth discussion of this

over on the wooden boat forum. The consensus was/is that there is enough redundancy built into the system because of WAAS that there will be very little disruption of normal activity.
