At least with a boat there is no shortage
of water. I think I am the only owner on my pier that washes the boat with a bucket and a swab. The others unwind a hose and use treated water. I just scoop up a bucket full and sluice it down the deck, dip the swab over the side and scrub and then rince with bay water.

Watch out for Microsoft
You may be giving Microsoft an entry point into Sailing. Now they can re-brand Windows Defender and release a Sailing Edition. I slip near LAX Airport and have ther grime to contend with, too. At least the CD's are good reflectors for light and radar?.

Thanks for all the input guys. I guess my situation is not typical here at Whidbey Island. If I can just keep the flock of birds that show up at sunrise and stay all day to just go next door, my problem is solved. No steel mill dust, railroads, freeways, spiders or mud daubers (whatever they are). I do have eagles, herons, seagulls, mallards, osprey, owls, hawks, sparrows, wrens, robins and 342 other species of berry, fish and garbage eating, sh*t-shooting, hurling flying mess-makers that I clean up after and I am happy to say that after installing my sofware the problem has almost dissappeared. As for the remote input unit, I do not even need to use it anymore. It did come in handy a few times in the beginning but I think my flock is trained. I am working on the range problem newsailor. Maybe by July when your distance is reduced to 30 miles something will be available. I can see that a larger reel of string will be called for and routing may present some challenges.

Airborne dirt
We have airborne dirt on the Sassafras as well, they're called sparrows and wrens. They nest or sit everywhere they can. I had to block up the opening on the end of the boom to keep them from nesting in there. I wrap a bungy cord around the headsail so I can keep the jib sheets slack, one less perch for them. Now what to do to keep them off the life lines, spreaders, windex, etc. Chalk one up for Mother Nature and keep the hose and bucket handy.

Jim Rushing to keep spiders at bay
Ninette, I am sure is the spider capital of the world, but we use a product called Spider Ban. It is a spray and is applied to the masthead, motor, rudder head, around the outside of the companionway, inside lockers, at the spreaders, windex, gooseneck, boarding ladder, wherever spiders tend to spin a web. I was quite impressed when I used it for the first time last summer. I forgot to spray under the sailcover however, so guess where the spider poop ended up? Spider Ban, Spider Ban, goes wherever a spider can... opps, ...sorry! I'll keep my singing for the shower.

Other place that we spray for spiders is the rub rail, and the docklines. We really cut down the spiders last year by doing spraying there as well. Now if we could just figure out how to scare away the mud dobbers...
