I am looking at a 1974 Catalina 27 to buy that has a soft spot on the deck above the vberth. Can you tell me if that is a hard repair? The spot is about 2x2 feet & is towards the very front.
Sounds like separation of the fiberglass / balsa wood sandwich. This is a very involved repair and not for the faint of heart. Usually you would do something like this from the bottom as you need to cut off one side of the fiberglass sandwich to remove the wet balsa core. Doing it from below will allow you to hide the resulting cosmetic damage. Best advice? Keep looking.
I am looking to buy a 74 Catalina 27 for $3500.00 but I have a few concerns. The forward deck is soft. Also, the ceiling of the cabin is wavy but does not appear to be soft. The mast does not appear to be sunken in. Any comments about this purchase?
