I am new to this forum and am looking to move up from dingy sailing to a C22 sized boat. I have read a number of posts in the C25 Owners Association forum that talked about problems with soft decks from water incursions from improperly bedded chain plates. Is this a typical problem with the C22? Also from my reading I am favoring a late 80’s model wing keel. Anything special to look for on this vintage wing keel? Thanks for any help you can offer

wing keels

I have had no trouble with the deck of my '88 wing keel and the wing sure beats the maintenance of the swing and has more room inside... I'm very pleased with my choice!

Ken, do you walk on the deck barefoot?

Ken: Could you feel the deck flexing with your bare feet on the boat that you wrote about? We were looking at a C-25 last year, and the broker said that it failed it's moisture test, but I couldn't feel any softness in the deck. We didn't get the boat, for a number of reasons. The little hatch that covers that anchor compartment did have a series of holes drilled into it. I was wondering if that was related to water trapped in that piece. I have seen other C-25 anchor compartment hatches that were replaced with teak, so I wonder if that part is especially prone to water absorption. tdb: We like our swing keel, but I've written about that many times. We do have a place to pick the boat off the trailer though, so maintenance is easier than trying to work on the keel with the boat on the trailer. I'm sure that you will be happy with a C-22. We had a 15 foot Chrysler Man-of-War before we got our C-22, and enjoyed that boat. I do miss planing, because a C-22 isn't suppose to plane, although we have had ours going faster than the theoretical hull speed, surfing down waves. They are great to cruise on, and if you have a fleet near you that you will sail with, they are even more fun. Aldo
