I am looking at a O'day 34, the broker said it has soft spots in the deck. What are they and can they be repaired? Is this a common problem on this model or on O'days in general? Thanks for any help

Randy - Soft spots in the deck are not uncomon but you want them checked out. They come from water penetrating the deck. Inside, between two thin layers of fiberglass is wood. When it gets wet it separates from the glass and eventually it rots. A good surveyor is necessary to help ascertain the cause and extend of the soft spots. THE BROKER WORKS FOR THE SELLER!! Remember this because if he (she) is calling the decks to your attention you definitely want to get some help here. Try to find a surveyor with NAMS (National Association of Marine Surveyors) credentials. At this stage, this is no reason to walk away from the boat but you need more information.
