I am considering buying a 1981 Hunter 22. The cockpit floor oils cans in several spots. The most serious problem seems to be right on top of the water tank. Do you know a way to strengthen the floor. Thanks.

Delamination Problem

Gil, Sounds like delamination. This sort of problem can be a pain to fix. This was caused by water penetrating the gel coat and getting into the laminate fibre. There are several ways to deal with this, either by drilling holes, leting the laminate dry (along time with dehumidifier) and then filling with epoxy. You can either tackle this from the top surface or from beneath. each has it's own set of advantages/disadvantages. There are several books out on the market that discuss these repairs in great detail such as Don Casey's "This Old Boat" or Nigel Calder's "Fibreglass boat repair" (I think that's the name: not sure). I've also attached a link of someone who's done this exact repair. Good luck, Let us know how it turns out (if you buy the boat) /Chuck S/V Windsongs 85 H23

Decided against buying

I decided against buying the Hunter 22. I am hoping to avoid dealing with those type issues. Thanks again.

Good Choice Keep Looking

Keep Looking. There have been many discussions about buying "project boats". Unless you have a ton of time to work on a "fixer-upper" then you are probably better off paying more and buying something that you can put in the water and start sailing right away and fix the little things that go along with owning a boat. Heck, I looked for a while and ended up driving from Louisiana to Virginia to buy a 23.5 I found on this web site because it was the right boat for me.
