That Su*ks

Tom Maybe in a swamp somewhere, but not on our SF Bay waterfront. Anoter bad example of Photoshop creativity misplaced. Geez, how tasteless. Stu

Aww...Stu, lighten up.

Everything on a boat should have at LEAST two functions....and he probably left his binoculars at the house... BTW, how fast is your PWC? ;)

Know The Feeling

Where I don't know if I exactly agree with the action, I do know the feeling. As we also keep our boat in Stamford, Ct and have a mooring just inside the breakwater behind the light house and of course just when you are relaxing after a great days sail here come the PWCs and the water skiers. They travel back and forth and around and around through the mooring field (no wake zone) and everybody rocks and rolls - no fun especially if you are rafted to a friends boat. On ocassion someone will call the Police, who actually do come out, but they try to balance the whole situation and all calms down till the Police go away and it starts again. Yea, I know the feeling..... Bob Keller sv Kathryn, Stamford Harbour, Ct

Whats the Bag Limit There?

We are allowed three per day here. If we all bagged even one on each outing and culled the herd a bit it would go a long way to end the overpopulation.

Not sporting

No guns, but boat hook or whisker pole, that seems reasonable as a herd-culler. Roger C27 & Mabel Cape Cod

Sorry Tom, but I agree with Stu

In this enlightened age of bad guys and terriorism, this post is of questionable taste.

Paintball Gun w/Integrated Video

I don't run into the problem much in Puget Sound - the water hangs around 60F much of the year and the PWC crazies are few and far between - the more offensive folks are the big powerboats with no sense of how their 10ft wake affects "that sailboat" that they pass with "plenty" of room - 30 yards.... I've always thought that the ultimate "take care of issues" device would be a paint ball gun with an integrated video camera. Capture video of the offender, clearly breaking the law and obliviously "responsible for his wake", and then indelibly mark him with about 20 red paintballs all caught on video to make identification and prosecution a snap. Sort of like the dye packs they use to capture bank robbers (don't ask me how I know.....). Tim Brogan April IV C350 #68 Seattle

Hey guys its a joke.. *pop ...

oops...I guess I offended the PCP (political correction police) Did you really think I am suggesting people carry rifles to "cull the herd" of PWC's ?(hee.. hee...hee). Lets hope its obviously a "photoshop" job. When we can't laugh at ourselves and recognize an obvious joke, then we are starting to have real problems. As for a matter of taste, its all relative, some people like it caleinte, spicy, and hot chili and others like it tastless, bland and boiled potatoes.

The Ultimate Solution

There was a *grr very large power boat in our old marina (somewhere else) whose skipper got a big kick out of bouncing everyone else around with his wake. *butt A couple of the guys (whom I have no association with) around thought *! they would pull one on him and placed a baggie of oregeno in his cockpit ;D and then called the sheriff. The sheriff came to investigate. The practical jokers were rolling on the floor of their boat on the other side of the pier. Then the DPS (State Troopers) pulled up, then the feds. *pop They ended up pulling pounds of grass and white stuff off of the boat. That boat and the skipper were never seen or heard from again at our marina. The pranksters thought about asking for a reward but (I'm told) they then decided it would be much better in the long run to just let it go. *x

Tom, no offense...

...maybe just a little sensitive because of the background of the picture. The one I liked better, though, was the cannonball off the Hobie cat at the PWCs. No politically correct nonsense on my mind there (guess I'm one of those libertarian sailors!!!). Too bad the guys who drive those demons aren't more sensitive. Perry, I loved that one. Where'd ya get the oregano? :) Tim, that paintball gun idea has a LOT of merit. I'll do some looking and see if I can get a spec going for one. Maybe if we buy in bulk we can get a discount. All the best to you all, Stu

Stu, Is that San Francisco in the background ?

How can you tell ? I can't even really distinguish anything in the distance - I really think if you ARE going to get these idiot PWC's or boaters off the water (and I will admit its only a percentage of them), then I think the best thing to shoot them with is a Video Camera (as suggested) and then take it to the local Marine Police or CG and force them to take action, especially if its repeat abusers. Heck they can send you a ticket for running a red light in the city with Video Camera's on the corners and toll fines for running through toll booths, why not this ??

Hey Tom, GREAT picture, but...

next time you may wish to consider a prone position on the foredeck with a bipod, much more stable for long-range shots! Hope you got your bag limit!

Yes It Is SF

I hope Stu doesn't mind if I answer for him but yes, that is SF in the background. Pt. Blunt on Angel Island is partially obscured by the barrel of the rifle. The Golden Gate Bridge would be visible to the right (from the picture's viewpoint) if one was beyond Pt. Blunt. Having been on my YC's race committee many many times, I have discharged a firearm over SF Bay 100's of times. Not a rifle though, a 12 guage shooting black powder blanks. :) Rodney, S/V Sashay SF Bay

Yes, it IS SF

Thanks, Rodney, no problem. Having been out there so much myself, I'm wondering how many times you've shot at me! *5 Thanks folks, Stu

not a PWC but a cigarette

last weekend, we were motoring up the Sassafrass just before knight Island staying in our markers....we draw 6 feet with the board up....on avaerage the river is about 13' deep but around knight Island there are a few sholes that average 3-4'....We were about 100 feet from just passing our red can when I was on deck tieing down the sails and tiding up the deck my wife was at the wheel......I was watching this bright yellow with red flame trim cigarette speed boat gunning up the river in our same direction.......He decided that he also "needed" to stay in the chanel even though he probably draws whay 10".......keeping his same high speed without slowing down he approched the red can...his coarse put it in a direct line of our stern.....he was going approx 40-45mph.....about 4 boat lenghs behind us....as soon as he passed the can he banked starboard and just missed us...well maybe 2 boat lengths...never slowing down!.......fine it worked but what if his steering failed??.......if he wants to jepordize his life and the life of his crew...fine...but dont involve, my crew ,my life and my vessel!

Rob, Is there a speed restriction on that part

of the river? If there was too bad you didn't have a handy video camera. I would have filmed that and taken it to the local police and forced them to take action. If they refuse to then I would go to their superiors and then to the local newspaper & TV. We should not have to suffer fools such as this. (Unless of course he was fully with in the guidelines of the law, then you live with it or try and have the laws changed) BTW - we should all be aware that boats creating wakes are responsible for their damage. There have already been many cases where they had to pay homeowners and boaters due to this damage.

Unfortunately

High speed boats and reckless behavior seem to be a problem no matter where there is a body of water. My primary sailing area is Pickwick Lake which is a fairly large lake on the Tennessee River right at the mouth of the Tombigbee Waterway. There are numerous cigarette type boats and PWC's here also and they are all in a hurry to get to no place with pretty much disregard to others around them. There are no speed limits in un restricted waters, however, there are laws against reckless operation. I've spoken with the Tennessee Fish and Game Commission which is one of the enforcement agencies in my area. They told me that they would arrest and prosecute any operator for reckless operation of a motor vessel on a photo or video of the act. They claim that they issue many high dollar citations for reckless operation, but the cigarette type boat owners just pay the fines and keep on with their activities. I'm sure that there will be some disagreements on this but it seems to me that there needs to be speed restrictions on any water way or body of water inside of the international boundries. Comments??
