So now what do I do?

Ok, now that we know you're on this coast . . . :)

I'm in Albany and sail on Fern Ridge Reservoir near Eugene. I'm not personally familiar with the the Mac 21 but I know there are at least a couple at the lake every summer. To a certain extent, a sailboat is a sailboat and the basics of rigging are the same. I'll offer what I can based on my own experience with our Capri 22.

Basic things to look for as far as the rigging goes - inspect all standing rigging for "meat hooks" (broken strands of wire), especially where the wire goes into fittings. If you have any meat hooks then it's not safe and must be replaced. Look for signs of rust or corrosion that might indicate a problem. Inside the cabin, look for any signs of leaks around the chain plates and any other load bearing fittings. Be sure to check the condition of the keel winch cable & hinges before you lower it the first time!

Running rigging - if it's worn/chafed then it needs to be replaced, and you're right, hardware store lines don't cut it. You were a power boater so I'm sure you know about West Marine in Tigard and out by Portland Meadows. There's also Columbia Marine Exchange near the airport and I'm sure there are a few other chandleries up there if you need lines & stuff. I've found Englund Marine to be fairly knowledgeable and competitive with WM though they lean more to fishing than sailing; not sure they're in Portland though.

Do you have a manual for the boat? http://www.macgregorsailors.com/manuals/Mac21_22_25_Manual.pdf I see instructions for rigging there, which will be helpful.

Lessons - I've heard good things about Portland Sailing Center and Willamette Sailing Club. The latter is mostly small boats but a lot of people will tell you that's the best way to learn to sail anyway. There are a couple of other schools up there too. If you want to come south, City of Eugene Parks & Rec offers ASA classes on a pair of J24's at Fern Ridge in the summer.

Hope this helps. PM me if you want to take this off the forum and switch to email.

Sounds like you might enjoy a few sailing classes. That's the best way to learn.

I would recommend taking an ASA class. Check out the fixed keel sailing course offered either in Portland or through the Eugene Parks and Rec Program. The course here in Eugene uses two J 24's which are great boats to learn on.

Hey cdavido, you sail Fern Ridge too? What marina, or do you trailer sail? We'll be on B dock at Richardson again once they finish building the new docks and open the marina.

We have been sailing out of Richardson. We are still shopping for our first Boat. We are a family of 4 with two sailing teenagers. We are getting close to buying a 1990 C 25. I'm still considering a 22 but for all of us to hang out for a day it looks like it would be tight. My wife and I had a blast sailing on the j24's last summer. How many adults can comfortably sit in the cockpit of your 22?

The Capri 22 (not to be confused with your standard Catalina 22) has a huge cockpit for its size. We can easily seat 3 on a side, 4 if you're willing to get cozy and maybe have one person manage the tiller and another the main/traveler. Headroom in the cabin is a different matter though. ;)

The C25 is nice but it's not going to perform like those J24's do. Most days I can outsail a C25. The J24's and Wavelength 24's will all smoke me though, especially Falcor (the red wavo). On the other hand you'll have head room (and maybe even a head!) which none of us have.

We'll be close to shore on B dock when they get the new ones in. Not sure what I'm going to do with the extra 2 feet of width. Might have to get a kayak or something. They're saying opening is May 18th. Youth sailing day is the 19th, so that should be interesting. Haven't decided yet whether I'm going to try and get ready early and request a temporary slip at Orchard Point. Maybe if the weather clears up.

Are you on the Fernsail yahoo group? I recommend it if you're going to keep a boat down there.

Let me know if you don't buy the C25 and need a sailing fix this summer. I'm always open to taking along one or two crew on Beer Can Tuesdays.

Thanks for the info on the user group. Getting closer to taking the plunge on the C-25.
