I'm going a bit stir crazy with too much snow so I decided to distract myself with my To Do list for spring commisioning. Before I get to my real question just thought I would get an opinion from those of you that are used to the amount of snow that we are getting in the Philadelphia region right now. Is it better to shovel throughout the snow storm or all at once? I've been out three times so far. With the 28" we got on Saturday, I think we have about 35 on the ground so far. Sailing season cannot get hear soon enough.

On another note, I'm having trouble finding my dip-stick for my transmission on my Universal 25 on my 1985 O'day 35. I think I better check this before the start of the season. I also want to change my impeller for the first time. Any tips?

Hey,

I know the feeling. We (on Long Island) got 14" on Wednesday. For shoveling, I used to shovel whenever there was 6" on the ground. Back in december we got hit with 25" of snow, and that was it for me. My sister (who lives 2 miles from me) agreed to split a snowblower. I was able to find an old used one in good condition. This is a monster - 11 hp engine, 32" wide blower, 4 forward and 2 reverse speeds, etc. It went through the last snow like nothing. I am done shoveling.

I can't help you with your transmission question.

For the impeller, if you have an oberdorfer raw water pump (4 screws on the cover, stamped 'oberdorfer' on it, an impeller change is easy:
-Turn off the raw water seacock
-remove the cover on the water pump
-I remove the shaft with impeller attached
-you need snap ring pliers to remove the snap ring
-don't lose any small pieces (washers, clip, etc.)
-remove impeller
-install new impeller
-install circlip
-place shaft with new impeller into pump

I used to worry about orienting the impeller vanes. I no longer do because it seems like the vanes go any which way they want after the engine has been run.

Before you take the cover off, make sure you have a new gasket. The original is paper and very thin.

This site should help you. On my M-12 the transmission dip does not look like your normal dip stick. Its really a plug on top of the transmission with stick built on it. You have to screw it in and out, sort of like a lawn mower dip stick.

This site will also help you with your impeller change too.

Plenty of good help here. http://www.marinedieseldirect.com/universal/200157/universal-owners-hurth-transmission.html
Thanks. I'll take a look at the top of the transmission when I go clean the snow off the boat tomorrow. Very useful site. Thanks again.
