A boat's name should be a refection of you. It's certainly perceived that way by others. If you're snarky, give it a snarky name.

Got a friend who named his boat Wanker. Very British sounding bridge tender on the ICW would only call it the "boat who shall not be named".

I hailed him once and someone answered "Did you really name your boat Wanker" I said "Yes, it's a 35 foot SeaRay".

I recently learned a lesson in picking a name for something. Be sure to Google it to see what comes up.
Recently I saw in a sailing thread a comment about a boat name with "dog" in it. Someone commented "at least they didn't spell it "DAWG"". I thought What's wrong with DAWG. I named my model railroad Gold Dawg RR back in 2005. Actually I will blame my wife, she chose the name but I liked it since we had two golden Retrievers and the logo was that of a golden.
I have the domain name and use it for my email address's. I had also noticed recently that a lot of emails I send have been bounced back as rejected by the server.
I mentioned it to my older sister who called me naive and suggested I google it. She was right!
Wish I had done that before I had signs made, decals applied to locos and cars, business cards, a web site and many accounts using the Gold Dawg name. My winter project is to get all on line references changed to Gold Dog and emails back to a standard comcast account.

Since I am at work I'm really afraid to Google "Gold Dawg" now, because I'll probably set off some firewall alarms or something in the IT center!

In other posts when talking about boat names I've mentioned the same thing (someone had asked about renaming a boat and the ceremony). I wanted to keep my post short, I tend to be long-winded (he, there's another one!)
Anyway, I totally agree w/ you. Snarky name or not, I think a name needs to be easy to spell, speak, see, and hail on VHF.
My rule about naming a boat after a wife/girlfriend is the same rule for tattoos... I bet you can guess what that is!:D

I would suggest that any name you choose will be easily understood via the VHF for boat to boat or bridge tenders to understand.

I would choose a name that not only fits your style but also, a name when heard compliments your vessel rather than a name that might seem undeserving.

Take the name of my boat TIEKILI, it was a documented boat & it took me awhile before I found out what it meant. I visioned Greek folklore, avian etc. Much to my shock it was, "I like it" spelled backwards. After the shock of this left me, I kinda liked the name.

Now, when folks on my boat having a good time say, "I like it," I say, "Hey, that's my boat name backwards!"

Take your time, you will find the best name. How about "Queen...girlfriend or wife's" name?

Diamonds

The original owner of our boat named it "Instead of Diamonds". I don't think his wife really appreciated that and last I heard they were no longer together.
After the appropriate ceremony to the gods of the sea, we renamed it "Diamonds". The name has some meaning for us because whenever I (we) made a major investment in a boat, my wife also got some diamond jewelry to sweeten the deal.

All mine

Mine came to me in the middle of the night. I was traveling from Santa Cruz Calif to Clearwater Florida to my boat monthly, for about 10 years on business .I choose (My time) spelled Mitym for my hunter 37c for which it still is. Also important is how it sounds on the radio . Just my thoughts , Joe

I'm in the market as were . Colonial Beach
I use to race on a boat called A.Tak Duck. The helmsman told me that before he bought the boat he was stepping off of it onto a dock and a duck attacked him. He yelled Attack duck and the name stuck. The logo for the boat was pretty bad ass too.

One of my Uncles owned and raced an Express 37. It was named Breathless. On his spinnaker he had a gigantic rolling stones symbol (lips with the tongue coming out). It was pretty cool.

The best advice is above, from Jackdaw and others; "If in doubt, stay classy." and think about how it sounds on the radio.

Dalliance was named by the previous owner. People, especially those under 40, sometimes don't know what it means and even mistake it for a woman's name or a flower. When I explain the word is often used as a euphemism for an affair and has two dictionary definitions; 1. Amorous flirtation, and 2. Dawdling or a frivolous spending of time ....and money (my addition), their eyes get big and they say "Oh yeh, that's a sailboat name!"

There is the (urban myth) name - FUJIMO - after a spat with his girlfriend named Judy a fellow moved out to live on his boat - FU Judy I'm Moving Out ...
We had a dock neighbor with a boat named PHUCIFINO ... when asked what it meant, he would reply with the boat's name - pronounced with a 'hard C' --
THAT'S about as snarky as it gets.

Sorry but fujimo is not an urban myth. The boat was based in Detroit and raced the port huron to mac race, among others. Wife wrote the note when he bought the new race boat over her objections. Spent all his time sailing.

Going back to my earlier comment on others having to say the name 3 times to hail you on the radio these could be names that may cause you issues with the FCC obscenity regulations. The first one at least can be said without sounding obscene. Your dock neighbors name not so much.

A phrase a friend often uses comes to mind. Too cute by half. ?

Oh well each to their own I guess.
