Snap goes the boot clamp

One of the four hose clamps securing the rubber boot behind the stuffing box broke. Probably makes sense to replace all since they are 31 years old. Anything there that does not meet the eye, tricky etc? Snub clamps down using a nutdriver or special torguing needed? Lube inside of the clamps so they do not scuff into the rubber, maybe?

Sure, why not. Next step is to put some leather between the algonquin hose and the clamps. Use AWAB clamps. I check mine regularly.

I second Stu's recommendations. The smooth clamps are the way to go.

I had a clamp fail as well a few years ago. Didn't leak but that winter after haul out I ended up replacing the entire stuffing box since the hose ages as well, and in my case didn't really like the friction and years of corrosion on the stuffing box as a whole. Not too pricey but money well spent.

I replaced my clamps last year. It was easy. Definitely use the smooth (more expensive) clamps. Also don't take them all off at once.:yikes:

Smoothies for sure and yes, not all at once. In my boat had to pull one of the batteries and its box and it still wasn't that easy as I cannot get two hands worth of holding power in there....maybe I should have worked from the cockpit locker but that is also a big reach downward.

i used t- bolt clamps on mine
The caution with t-bolt clamps is the spot weld and occasionally thread galling which later can lead to the bolt fracturing. I have seen far too snap in bilge areas right at the spot weld. If they can be kept dry they are great but otherwise the AWAB's are about as good as it gets.

Looked up some AWAB info. On the smaller clamps at least (fuel line size), they show T-bolt as design. AWAB is still the way to go though, right? And for fuel line, double up or just single ok?
