My boat had been sitting for 7 years. Since acquiring I have attempted to start/run the newer Yanmar 1GM10. Changes the fuel/fuel filters, bled the lines etc. The motor starts quickly but it runs rough and when it warms up it starts smoking a white smoke and then will stall. White smoke also exits the air cleaner. Currently there is no air filter element in place, the old one was deayiny and soaked with WD40 (used it trying to start initially). I was thinking that parts of the WD40 soaked foam element was getting sucked into the intake causing the problem, but not sure. Any ideas?

White Smoke - Airbound!

Bleed the system and try clean/new fuel, also. This will, at least, eliminate those questions.

Water?

I was under the impression that white smoke indicated water getting into the cylinders. White indicated steam, Black, unburnt fuel.

White Smoke

Could a dirty injector also cause the problem. Any idea on how to clean the fuel system? Do these motors idel rough and knock? I'm new to diesels. Also the engine won't rev over 2000rpm in gear. We had to run it in gear at the slip with the boat tied off, that's when it would start to smoke...maybe the wrong size prop?
