Smoking outboard

I have a 15HP Mercury 2 stroke outboard on my boat which is putting out more smoke than it used to. I have fresh gas, and the proper amount of oil mixture. I did run about 5 gal of last years gas through the motor before refueling. The old gas was treated with stabilizer though. Anybody have any ideas? The outboard is a 1999 model with low hours.

Smoking?

Hi Ed, Is this motor oil injected or do you mix the oil in the gas yourself? If you mix yourself I would say you accidently put in more than you thought you did. If it is oil injected, you may want to have it looked at. Regards, Brian

run it dry?

Did you run the motor dry last fall before storing it? If not I would say youhave a gummed up carb. If that is the case you can get some real good carb. cleaner and pure it down the drain for all the good it will do you. I would just take the carb. off and give it a good cleaning buy hand with a good strong solvent but don'tthink your going to run the motor clean at least I have never seen anyone do it. In the long run it's easyer to just bite the bullit and take it apart and clean all the jets that way. I'm in the prosses of doing this to my 70s 5hp sears 2 stroke.

Has your state recently changed from .....

MTBE additive fuel to Ethyl Alcohol additive for gasoline fuels? If you mix MTBE additive gasoline with Ethanol additive gasoline ... the mixture of both is incompatible and you will/may get very unstable 'burn'. Check to see if you local gasoline station has switched; if so, you should probably dump any fuel already in the fuel tank and start again with entirely Ethanol (gasohol) based gasoline.

Possibilities?

Is it possible that the adjustment for rich/lean mixture got out of adjustment? Also try new gas (mabe even mid grade would not go to premium in a small OB) with a high quality 2 stroke oil.
