Hello All, I have been batteling a smoke problem on our 1981 27' hunter. It has a 1gm yanmar diesl. The smoke is dark and attaches to the back of the boat. I've tried all of the following: 1. Pulled the injector, shop said it was clean. 2. Pulled the mixing elbow and had it blasted clean. 3. Changed the air filter and made sure the air intake was clear. 4. Made sure the exhaust hose was unkinked and clear from engine to through/haul. After all this the only thing left (according to my best friends marine diesel engines book) is barnacle build up on the shaft. I'm due next week to have the boat pulled, cleaned, repainted, and re-zinked. The only thing ( that my friend made me aware of ) is that it is smoking in idle. That shoot the theory of the barnacale build up... Does anyone have a suggestion that is not listed above........ Its killing my gelcoat....... thanks, Jacques E . Picou

Too much fuel.

Jacques: You are correct in your assumption that cleaning the bottom is not going to make any difference at idle. It sounds like you have done all the correct things. You may want to get another injector and try that out. If all else fails, hire a YANMAR mechanic and see what they find.

The injector pump

is the "heart" of that engine, you might want to pull it and have the seals changed and have the pump cleaned. Although smoking at idle kind of sounds like ring blow by, hard to say, check torreson marine archives, link below

I had the same problem, with the same engine

and went thru everything you have done. None of that was the answer.....it turned out that the prop that was put on after the previous one got bent was the wrong size pitch. I checked the old one (which I had kept to remind me what not to allow to happen again) and had the boat pulled. Sure enough, the size was the same, the pitch was not. It is absolutely amazing what difference it has made since we put the 'RIGHT' prop back on the boat. No black smoke on the aft or on the side. Everything is great now......will be even better after our Spring Launch :).
