Smoke from the Air Intake

My single-cylinder Yanmar YSM “belches” thick black smoke from the air intake when it is “cold starting”. (It has no glow plug.) There is a considerable amount of smoke, which leaves the galley smelling of diesel fuel at the onset of every outing. It almost always requires multiple cranks to start the engine when cold. However, once the engine has been started it runs beautifully and will usually restart on the first crank-turn without a hint of smoke from the breather. Q: Is this typical? If so, what should I be doing to combat the fuel odor from the smoke? If not, what is the problem? ~ I spoke with a Yanmar dealer/rebuilder who suggested the injectors timing may be off. Please advise. Jax
