Smelly intake for head

Does anyone have any ideas on how to keep the intake for the head from smelling? I have a regular flanged thru hull, small stainer, new tubing, now something has grown on the inside and is obvious after having not used it in some time, turn the handle to flush, pump, and out comes really horrid snelling brown'ish water. another option

In my previous boat, the prior owner plumped a hose via T fitting from the head sink drain. So by keeping the sink drain thruhull closed we could run fresh water into the sink, then pump it out via the head.Sea water is full of microorganisams that that after a while die in your system causing the stink.

But, they only stink for the first flush. Try closing the intake thru-hull and pumping the head on 'wet bowl' until no more water comes in. Then next time it will take a few pumps to get water in, but it wont stink.

Fresh Water Sprayer

I put in a hand spray hose like at a home sink to my fresh water system use it to flush the head at the end of every day's use with fresh water. Nick

Use the shower head

Bug sprayer...

we use a gallon jug and a gallon bug sprayer to flush and rinse the toilet (head to be PC) but am now making plans to install a small Todd tank in the v-berth area and plumb it to the flush water intake on the head pump. We don't get as much debris as Tony does but our water is quite brackish so fresh water is the only way to go, given some of the complaints from my dock mates. (Tony, will be at Tidewater Sat afternoon, GOB ballcap).

A better alternative, Dan...

Your plan to add a rigid flush water tank will require a separate fill, and the tank will also have to be vented.Instead, find a convenient location near both the toilet and the head sink drain in which you can stuff a 5-6 gallon UNvented bladder. Connect the bladder fill to the sink drain...the head intake line to the bladder. Run water down the sink to fill it.No other plumbing needed...and no interface whatever with your fresh water system.

Thanks for the input, I knew not to hook the head up to the fresh water, but hadn't thought about a separate bladder, which with a y value to the outside sounds like the best option for me. Thanks again, Keith
