Smelly Fresh Water

I want to install a charcoal filter in my fresh water line at the water pump. I think this will reduce the odor of the fresh water. The odor may be partly a result of the chlorine tablets I put in. Any suggestions?

Wall Mart's RV dept in auto section

Take a look at the the filter sold at Wall Mart in the RV section of the auto department. Blue in color, sells for about $16.00. Has male and female hose fitting on either end. You can convert this to barb fittings to install. I have a quick-connect screwed in to hook this on the end of my hose when I fill my water tank. More expensive way to go would be to purchase and install an under-the-sink filter unit from Lowes, Sears, Home Depot, ect. You pays your money, you take your choice.

Filter both ways

On my 35.5 I filter the water as I fill the tank and also as I use the water. I built in a Nature Pure filtering system so that all the water is filtered before using it. Added a accumulator after the filter to give sufficient volume.

Another idea

Is to run the water regularly, as recommended by Peggie the Headmistress. This keeps the water circulating and the pipes clean. Works for me. Hey, and what stuff gets into the water usually sinks to the bottom of the glass, which is a good thing.

Filtering the fresh water

It is my understanding that you should not use a charcoal type filter when FILLING YOUR TANKS because you will remove the chlorine, thus the water in the tanks will go bad quicker. It is ok to filter for sediment while filling. A charcoal filter can be used between the tank and your tap to eliminate the odor, however.

Chlorine smell should go away.

There is nothing wrong with putting chlorine in your water, and no one is going to get a toxic drink from it. As long as you put in the correct amount, which is about 8-10 drops per gallon of water. The chlorine small will disappear after a while. How long has it been since you cleaned out the water tank? I regularly put chlorine in my water tank when I am fill it. Every spring, I drain the entire tank, give it a big dose of chlorine, mixed with water, shake the boat vigorously, ok, ok, go for a quick rough sail, then flush it and rinse it. I then fill the tank with fresh water and a regular dose of chlorine. I will get some smell for a few days, and after that, no smell. If you haven't cleaned your water tank for quite a few years, it may be a good idea.
