I have to tell this story because it is so uncanny. When we sold our first boat, the guy who bought her was the guy who sold her to the guy I bought her from. He just happened to look at boat listings one day, on a whim, and saw his old boat. So, he figured it was fate and bought her back.
Many years later, we needed to sell our second boat. We ultimately decided to donate her to a local non-profit boating organization. The way that works is they advertise and show the boat and negotiate the final price. Then we execute the sale and donate the money to the organization. This worked out great since the boat was on the hard right next to the boating center, but it was hard for me to make it down there to show the boat.
They finally got a buyer, but the logistics of handling the final transaction was tricky. She was from out of town, plus we were leaving to go cruising. We ended up leaving the paperwork at the boating center. The last we heard, she was planning on putting the boat in the water in September.
On Wednesday, we get an email that she was on the ferry, en route to the boatyard, and was expecting to complete the transaction, get the boat put back in the water, and bring her back to Deer Harbor (about 25 NM away) the same day.
As it happens, our plans brought us to Deer Harbor yesterday morning. We pull into our designated slip and look across the way and see this - the very boat.
Scrappy lass actually pulled it off! Plus I got the chance to see the old boat back in the water - nice after a year on the hard. I chatted a few minutes with the new owner. Looks like they've both got some adventures ahead.
