Robert...

boats like that are very simply rigged. Get one of the sailors of small boats where you are to give you a hand.

I bet a 12 year old kid could help you--they humble me sometimes! In our club's summer camp we teach them how to rig a small boat for sailing. They become smart as whips in short order.

Go to Class Web Site

This is an older boat so check the registration and see if it says anything about the manufacturer.

Another thing to check is the main sail (the big one), and look for a class symbol on it. Take a picture of the symbol and post it here.

Once you post the picture of the class symbol then one could go to their web site (almost every class and manufacturer has a web site) and one could most likely find something about rigging.

P.S.: Make sure the stays (the thin wire cables that hold the mast up) don't have any broken strands(!).

For generic rigging, there are a few books that could help:

If you're in a hurry you could get one at your local marine store or, to save money, buy it at this web site, Sailboatowners.com.

mavreix,

Don't feel bad. When we got our boat home, the first thing we did was pull the mast off the boat and and spread all those "ropes" out to figure out which was which! You'll get good at it!

I agree. Don't fee bad. Google the boat brand and see if there are any manuals out there. I did that with an O'Day Daysailer II I bought a few years back and found the entire manual online. Best of Luck!

Thx for the leads on the sail! that helped tremendously, turns out to be a pintail and there are plenty of those around on the net on similar boats to mine, Ive figured out how the jib is rigged and Ive ordered some of the books you suggested and a west marine catalog to familiarize myself with the names of various parts. Thx for the help all

I took sailing lessons as a teenager and learned alot. Didn't sail at all for a million years. Then I took my wife sailing on a Hobie Cat with just a mainsail. Although not like riding a bike, it all mostly came back to me quickly. Several years later, (this past August) we bought our first "big" boat. You know, one with a small sail up front and a cabin. I decided to take an A.S.A. certification class. Best money I could have spent. I learned so much about how "big" boats work and relearned the theory behind sailing. Also learned alot about safety. I highly recommend one-on-one instruction. The only thing hard about it was the book-learning. Oh, and the man overboard drills. I hated the man overboard drills. But probably the most important thing the instructor taught me (yes, you would think this should be obvious but I guess I took the classes very seriously) is that sailing is supposed to be FUN!

Good luck and have fun with your new boat!
