Small portable generator question???

Oday 25 Who out there has experience with small generators to power a window unit A/C on their boat? I figure that a 1kw generator should be sufficient to run a 5000 BTU A/C with maybe a little to spare. I first thought that cranking a generator within 100 yards of a fellow boater would probably result shots being fired at me, but I'm told that the new ones are remarkably quiet.....and......lightweight. Someone on ebay is selling a 1kw portable for $189 which is definately in my budget. This might be a substandard quality one, cause others run much more....anybody familiar with this one? I like the idea of storing a small manageable generator in my lazerette, and pull it out when necessary. Am I way off here? Any advice appreciated.....Gary

go for it..

I'd drop the bucks and get a good generator. Skip the one on ebay. I just bought an 1850W Coleman at Home Depot for 399.00 If you look on the box of thoes small air conditioners they run at about 5 amps but will need more to start. So look for a generator that will produce about 15 amps. Pat

Check out the Hondas

Check out Honda's Ex700c or the Eu100iA2, These will do what you want and they look like a suitcase. Beside it is quiet. The dealer fired these up in the ship store for me and I was very surprised at how quiet and stowable these things were. Perfect for your AC. Did you ever check out the Air on an Oday25 posting that I put up last year. it is still on the board. It works great and is out of the way. I think that I will write an ammendment to that article with measurements and more photographs. Seth Dixon Quiet Time 77 Oday 25

Oh yes....I've seen it

Your post inspired me way back last year and have since planned to do exactly as you did. The only part that is a little intimidating is cutting and sewing the tarp to fit neatly as your did. Does your A/C unit stow on the floor under the filler piece in the v-berth? If so, it could serve as a step to get thru the forward hatch. It looks like the perfect place to stow it away, but not sure if the unit would be too wide. One additional step I may do, is make a nylon carrying strap for the a/c unit so as to make it easier to handle. I'll look up the Honda units you mentioned. Thanks for the info

It does.

It stows quite nicely under the filler for the v berth. I dont think that I would use it for a step unless your a light weight. I just think that the unit would bend if youwere to step on it. Seth Dixon Quiet time 77 Oday 25

Honda is definitely quiet

I just got a EU1000i about three months ago and it is absolutely the quietest generator I have ever seen/used. Plus its a four-stroke and compact! I use it to recharge the batteries, so can't comment on its A/C abilities. It is a bit pricey however, but given the features, probably worth it.
