Small outboard engine tilt problem

I have a Honda 8 HP 4 stroke on the transom of my Coronado 25. The last time I started the engine everything ran normally. When I shut it off and went to tilt it up I found a perplexing delemma. When I had tilted the engine down into running position, the wire, which pulls the release lever (to tilt it back up) got jammed under the engine as it came down and now isn't able to pull the release mechanism back to tilt the engine up. I can't seem to get the mechanism to unlock or release to tilt the engine back up. Has this happened to anyone else? Is there an easy way to help this short of taking the engine off the transom. I have remote controls (shift and throttle) connected to the engine and would rather not disconnect the motor from the boat unless I have to. Any advice appreciated. Steve
